Can I get some T&Ps for my mom? (update)

She dislocated her kneecap last night.  That happens, from time to time, as she's had 7 surgeries on it in the past 25 years due to a ballet injury.  Anyway, it normally pops back into place but this time it won't.  She's going to get it looked at today and I'm betting they'll suggest reconstruction and/or total replacement (they have before, but she's always put it off as it was in a "good" phase) ... which is probably better in the end but not something you ever really want to deal with.  And something she's sorta flipping out about.

So, T&Ps for an easy fix and less stressed out mama would be awesome.

  • Oh of course! And ouch! I've had my knee dislocated before and know it hurts. I hope she's ok and T&Ps sent.
  • Oh no, I have had my knee cap pop out of place and that is some awful pain. T&P sent.
  • Thanks guys - they definitely helped!  The ER said that she's definitely undone some of the repair work, but they can't really tell the extent because of the amount of fluid.  They've got her in an immobilizer for now, and on crutches, and she's to follow up with her orthopedic surgeon when she gets home (she's here in WV until after S's b'day, but lives in SC).  She talked to him briefly on the phone today and he said if work needs to be done he'll likely suggest a replacement vs. another repair, but he'll make that final call once he checks her out week after next.  But it's back in place for now and no immediate need for surgery.

She's doing a bit better, stress wise.  Her big concern is that she also has MS so her leg & muscle strength/coordination isn't that great to begin with.  She's worried about the rehabilitation after a replacement ... that she won't be able to do it and will end up 100% in a wheel chair (she's currently not in one around the house, but uses one or a scooter when she goes out).  I'm not a doctor (obviously lol) but I just don't think that's the case.  I think the replacement would actually help her strength & stability and, either way, not having a knee that causes an immense amount of pain has to be a good thing too, right?  So we're just trying to keep reminding her of that.

  • This summer my mom had surgery on both her knees, and she was surprisingly up and around pretty quickly.  She does complain about them being cold, so I made her some knee warmers, lol.

T&P--hopefully it won't be so bad and she'll be out of pain soon!

  • Sending t&p's for your mom!  If it makes you/her feel better, most of my patients with total knee replacements do INCREDIBLY well post-op.  They usually tell me they wish they'd had the surgery years before.
  • Absolutely, sorry that that it's bothering her now :(

That is awesome to hear.  I'm really hoping she breezes through it ... my g'ma had both of hers done a few months ago and did great with it, so we've been asking my mom if she's going to let her mom show her up. lol

And aspade - the knee warmers are such a cute idea!  Maybe I should take this as a sign that I need to get my butt in gear and learn to knit so I can make some for my mama. :)

  • my mom had both of her knees replaced at the same time about a year and a half ago. she was back at work (she works overnights in a hospital as a resp. therapist) in 12 weeks. She was up and standing within a day or two, and did no time in a rehab facility, and she had to handle a couple stairs to get into the house.

She did stay on the same floor for a few months post op (she slept in the extra bedroom), and my sisters and I took turns spending the day with her to help for a couple weeks...but she did really well.

In fact, the day after surgery she told her surgeon that the post op pain was was far less than her daily pain before.

  • T&P for your mom - glad to hear she doesn't need surgery at the moment.  Hope she is able to get things taken care of when she gets back home.  For now - enjoy Christmas & S's birthday!

This reminds me of another ? I had for you ladies with loved ones who have been through the surgery - at what point would a 6hr car ride be comfortable for her?  I'm sure her surgeon will have more info on this but, well, you guys are here and he's not. lol  My mom doesn't have any family in SC other than my step-dad and I was wondering about getting her up here a few weeks into her recovery so she'd have someone around the house.  B works evenings so he could be with her during the day, and I could be with her in the evening/night.

And thanks again for the T&Ps and positive stories guys.  I'm sure sharing these with her will help her worries immensely. :)

I'm happy to share the pattern!  If you decide to learn to knit, I'm sure there will be some overjoyed, supportive EFFers. ; )

  • I rode four hours, on the day of my last foot surgery.  It wasn't fun, but I survived.  I would say that as long as you have a vehicle she can stretch out in, she'd be fine for the drive a couple of weeks post-op.  This would be up to her doctor, though, especially with her other medical conditions.
  • T&P being sent her way.

I have to throw in there that my dad had a total knee replacement 6 weeks ago. He had put it off for about 10 years. He's so disappointed he didn't do it sooner. He was up and around the next day and has been walking 3 miles a night with my mom just around the neighborhood. He feels better now than he has in years. So... hopefully if your mom decides on something like that she has a very similar outcome. Either way I hope she isn't in much pain and that the fix won't be too hard on her!

  • Wow!  That's really awesome, njh.  It must have made a huge difference for him!

And Glad - That's really encouraging about the travel.  I know we'd all feel a lot better to have someone with her 24/7 and I'll take about any excuse I can to have an extended visit with my mom. ;)

aspade - I'm going to PM you in a sec.  I'd love to have the pattern.  Knitting, here I come!  Woohooo!
