Restless legs

Hi! I was wondering if anyone has had the feeling of 'restless' legs during their pregnancy? It seems like I can't sleep because my legs need to be moving...if that makes sense? I've been searching the internet but am only scaring myself.

I will ask my Dr. at my next appt. in a week but was wondering what you did to make it subside.

(Introduce myself: I have a 1 year old son, Apollo, whom we adopted last year after trouble conceiving. This baby was obviously a surprise!)

  • I have had RLS my entire life. It hasn't bothered me for years but when I became pregnant this time it came back with a vengence! Ugh! Not much you can really do about it. There is a drug for it but you can't take it during pregnancy.
  • Oh god yes and it's miserable. That and cramping legs. Massaging actually seems to be intolerable most of the time and just makes them feel crampier. The only thing that seems to work so far is stretching them when I feel it coming. I just put the ball of my foot on something when they're starting to get restless and stretch my heel down. Usually if I do that for a while before bed I can manage to get to sleep. I haven't tried any tingly lotion though. I'll have to give that a shot.

  • I have them...it does seem more at night or late evening.  I heard it helps if you cut down on sugar and caffeine it helps.  I'm not sure on that because I have still had them
  • I have found that if I go for a walk or run (pre pregnancy) and REALLY get in a workout (a few miles at least) I do not get RLS as much. Sometimes I think it is my body telling me to get off my booty and get moving. :)

  • It's more like restless body syndrome for me. It's the same tingly, need to move feeling, but all over.

I've found that movement helps. If I tap my foot in bed, or rock back and forth, it helps. I've been finding lately that the jitters cause me to jolt awake right as I'm almost asleep though. Tongue Tied

  • My doc told me I could use the aspercream rub, which seems to help. Although I admit I would rather just use a heating pad. I hate RLS!
  • Thank you for all the advice everyone!
I'm going to try each of the suggestions every night and hope it helps :)
  • This may sound really silly, but I had someone suggest to me to put a bar of soap at the foot of the bed under the fitted sheet.  Doesn't have to be a new one, just when one is about to whither away stick it at the foot of your bed.  I have this problem, but mine doesn't hit me so much at night as during the day so I haven't tried this remedy personally but it has worked for others.
