LO Shaking Head Vigorously - Like Saying No?

Yesterday LO started shaking her head back and forth pretty vigorously like she is saying no. She does it while on her back and on her tummy. She isn't crying nor does she have a temp. Could she have an ear infection? I only say this (might sound strange), but one of our dogs does this when he has an ear infection. We called the after hours nurse line last night and they told us to bring her in this morning. Does anyone else's LO do this?

Re: LO Shaking Head Vigorously - Like Saying No?

  • My DS has been doing this for about a week now.  I think it looks a little 'special' doing it but he always has a big goofy grin on his face while doing it so I haven't been alarmed about it.  Most of the time when he does it his is banging his big, chubby cheeks against the booby he just popped off of.

I have just been chalking it up to something new he figured out he can do and wants to practice - over and over and over again.

Does your DD have a fever or act as though she is in pain at all? I'm curious about what it is now. GL at the doctor.

  • It COULD be an ear infection, but probably not.

DD does this all the time... and our pedi basically told us she does it because "she can". They do a lot of weird things at this age... all the weird hand movements (look at me, I'm conducting!), the shaking of the head, the tilting the head to one side... all normal.

Now, if she starts TUGGING on her ears, I'd take a closer look. Or if she shows any other symptoms (cough, runny nose, fever, cranky, won't sleep) then get her checked out.

    GL!

  • My daughter does this when she's tired and trying to put herself to sleep. She won't really do it while sitting, it's always when on her back. Soon after we see her do it her thumb goes in her mouth and she's asleep.

  • One of my twins does this too. It's a little disturbing. My Dh thinks he is doing it because "it's fun"  I don't know. We have our 9th month appt soon so I will ask the pedi about it then. I do tend to think it probably is what pp said- it's just because they can.

She has no signs of being sick at all. She is teething, but that's it. She is actually smiling when she does it.

She's probably fine. Teething alone does weird things to kids. :)

  • DS has been doing this for a while & I don't worry about it. He probably still does it because he can always gets a reaction or a laugh out of it from people. Crazy babies :)
    no
  • my daughter did this for about a week and being the paranoid person I am (and I'm a nurse so I'm the worst kind of paranoid) brought her to the Pedi..the Pedi said that since she's teething she's likely experiencing nerve pain that travels along the mouth to the ears. I gave her Motrin that week when she seemed to be doing this more which seemed to help...since then she's not done it at all. Maybe it's that or like others have said, she's just learning a "new move"! :)
  • My DD does this and we've adding saying "no, no, no" and laughing and she'll do it and laugh!  She just thinks it's fun to shake her head...
