how can i help her poop?

so we recently started solids, and i know she hasn't taken in a bunch but all of a sudden my super pooper who normally goes several times every day scaled back to two days of once a day then not at all yesterday.

i know bf'ed babies don't always poop all the time but since this isn't her norm, the intro of solids, plus she's been farting up a storm and cranky (and slept like craaaaaap last night) i'm thinking she's a bit constipated and would benefit from a good poop.

so what can i do/give her to help?

  • Lay her on her back and do bicycle legs with her and do some where you just sort of push her legs up (bending at the knee) towards her belly.  Like she were squatting sort of.

  • DS went from pooping every day to only once a week or less after starting solids, so we basically cut out anything that would make it more difficult for him (bananas, apples, rice) and started feeding him only things that are easy to digest (prunes, plums, pears, oatmeal, sweet potatoes.) 2.5 months later, he still has the same issues, so we started giving him an ounce of apple juice a day. We're still seeing if this works or not. Bicycling his legs and all those tried-and-true tricks never really worked for us.

Pretty much the same over here. We eat a lot of prunes, fortunately she likes them!

ugh!  so far she's only really had sweet potatoes and then last night pears for the first time.  we've tried bananas but she hasn't liked them and i don't think much got down if any.

poor baby bellies!  i can't imagine once a week!!

  • It was suggested to me for me to drink grape juice and then L would reap the benefits.  It worked for us.

  • Diluted apple juice ALWAYS gets things moving for DS! I've been giving him a little juice every day since he started solids around 5-6 months and we haven't had any constipation issues. If that doesn't work, we have used kid-sized suppositories which are literally a magic bullet!

  • Maybe a warm bath or an enima of warm water? That worked for DD. She had the same problem after starting solids. Once she went 6 days and was miserable. None of the above worked so I had to give her Pedialax. Worked in seconds and boy did she poo! I hope your DD feeks better soon.
  • I had to start 3 meals a day for DS much earlier than anticipated and he got really backed up too.  So his breakfast for a long time was oatmeal with a little bit of pureed prunes mixed in.  It keeps well in the fridge and doesn't really freeze well so make smaller batches.  That worked wonders and eventually it was causing him to have more poops than he should so we stopped and he's been fine since!

If nothing else, a thermometer (you can lubricate with olive oil) will do the trick too.

  • A warm bath and belly massage always helped Julia.

  • There are some infant massage techniques that are supposed to help. Google can probably help you find details, if you haven't done any infant massage with her. There are a few moving the legs ones and a couple abdomen-massaging ones that might help.

Interestingly, we had the opposite problem when we started solids. DS was having pretty reliable once a day poops by the time we started solids, and started pooping 2-3 times a day since starting solids.

  • pear and prune puree helped, and green peas are also good.  Bananas and apples seem to be particularly problematic for constipation, which is too bad, since DD loves them.  Now I do an oatmeal/apple/prune combo instead of just oats and apples.
