Questions about weaning Lo off middle of the day BF

I'll be returning to work when LO is 12 months. My plan is to wean LO off the middle of the day BM, and still nurse her morning and night.

I don't intend to pump.

So do I just drop that one feed and not worry about doing anything special seeing as it's just one session?

I was planning on just giving LO cow's milk during the day. Should I go the formula route for during daycare? Is it THAT much more nutritious? LO has no problems with dairy.

Will wearing a normal (underwire) bra to work bother my supply at all, if I wear it all day? Should I keep wearing a nursing bra?

LOs not brilliant at a bottle, she's ok at it. She's ok at a sippy cup and she's ok at drinking out of a regular cup. Should I put more practice into these before she goes to daycare? If so which one? Or will she just work it out?

Any other thoughts, advice or tips?

Thanks

Re: Questions about weaning Lo off middle of the day BF

  • If she's at a normal weight going to cow's milk at 1 year should be fine.  I'd definitely give it in a sippy or normal cup if she'll take it.  I want my DS to be bottle-free (he only gets them when I'm away from him now) by the time he's a year old so I let him practice with a sippy cup (with water, during meals) every day.

I dropped pumping for 3 evenings a week (I was in class) when DD turned a year.  We didn't have any problems continuing to nurse at other times.  I also will skip a nursing here and there depending on activities of the day and it seems to all work out fine.

I wouldn't do formula past a year because it's got the calories and nutrients for a rapidly growing infant.  Toddlers need more calories from food (or bm) and don't really need the formula.  In all honesty, I only give DD milk about 2 or 3 times a week because I figure she's fine with BM and all the other dairy she eats.  I've read that babies need 16oz of whole milk/dairy a day, but your bm counts in that.  DD gets water throughout the day except when we nurse.

I wear underwire nursing bras and haven't had any problems.

I wouldn't do a bottle at all at this point.  Have you tried a straw cup?  That's what DD likes the best here.

Any other thoughts, advice or tips?  Good luck!  I know it's worrying, but I'm sure she'll adjust great.

    Thanks

  • At a year I'd go with cows milk. As for the bra, I'm not sure because I'm only 7 months into bfing so I haven't crossed that bridge yet, but Bravado makes an AWESOME underwire nursing bra :). Just a suggestion if you find a reg one um comfortable. 1ht from phone
