Thumb sucking question

Both of my kids are huge thumb suckers.  My 4 1/2 year old is starting to get teased about in her PreK class.  Her teachers have told me she really only sucks it when she is tired which is an improvement and all I really see at home as well.  My cousin gave me that Malva Stop stuff that tastes nasty so encourages kids to stop sucking - have you used this and did it work?  How long did it take?  Did you try anything else that worked?

Thanks

Re: Thumb sucking question

  • My now 4 year old stopped sucking his fingers (yes 2 fingers) when he turned 3. Nothing I said worked until we went to see the dentist. The dentist told him he had to stop and that he'll get a cool prize next time he's back if he stopped sucking them. Well, that worked and he quit right then & there. It really was miracle how quickly he stopped.
  • Our dentist told us about that stuff. Haven't tried it yet

  • I dont have thumb suckers, BUT I was a hard core thumb sucker until kindergarten.. My parent tried everything to get me to stop.. My mom said when they would talk to me about it I would "run away" to our club house so they wouldnt see me sucking my thumb.. they got me to stop by telling me that I couldnt go to kindergarten until I stopped sucking my thumb.. My mom said it was like a switch flipped and I just stopped...

    Good Luck!

  • haven't tried anything yet. ?she's 4.5

She only does it at home when falling asleep, or in the car after a while though. ?The mild amount of teasing she got at daycare was enough to slow her down about a year ago. ?I'm not worried about it at this point, to be honest.
