I think the commercialization and mass capitilism that has become Christmas is DISGUSTING and I am not even religious. I think most of you will spend too much money on your LOs for the holidays and it will only teach them to be greedy and unappreciative like "most" Americans.
while i pretty much agree with the sentiment in your first sentence, i think your second sentence is extremely rude.
if you're not religious, but you don't agree with the present-buying, how will you be celebrating? what is the meaning of christmas to you?
Be a pagan and celebrate the winter solstice!

I think i love you.
Thank you! DS will be getting a total of 2 presents from us this year...he wont even remember anyway.
Congrats!
Thank you, I will take my award with Pride and Motivation!
Just playing devil's advocate (I think I am feeling controversial today which is odd for me---I'll blame AF)....but if its that stressful to not get alone time, get chores done, laundry, etc....then how is there time to bump? I will admit that I get on the bump often at work now in my new role. Its more project based and I work quickly so have a lot of down time right now. I don't get on the bump at home bc always busy doing laundry, cleaning, cooking, doing DD night routine, playing with DD during the few hours I get with her, or trying to spend a few quality minutes with DH.
However, I will say that as much as my heart longs to be a SAHM to get that precious time with DD....I don't think I would be ok with it on a full-time basis because I do enjoy my work and time outside of the house....so I can understand why you would feel the way that you do. Its kind of like my stresses involve not having enough time to do everything I need to do and missing DD and perhaps yours are more based around missing your life outside of the kids and SAHM gig which I totally get. Both are stressful in different ways.
Is it feasible at all for you to have a sitter or do mother's day out once per week so you can get some things done and enjoy some time to yourself? I have a couple friends who are SAHM and they do this.
When DD is playing by herself, 90% of the time, I need to deal with DS. Part of that time is him eating a bottle, and he is the kind of child that if I'm looking at him or talking to him, he gets excited and throws up or knocks the bottle out of his mouth, then he gets pissed off. So I will catch a minute or two to bump then. Or, if the kids are sleeping, I bump because DD can't have any noise while she's sleeping. The laundry room and kitchen project their noise directly into her room.
My bump time is off and on in 2 minute bursts all day. It's not like I sit on the bump 24 hours a day. If it shows I'm on at any given time, it's likely that the computer is open to have the music on while playing with the kids and I've left a bump thread up to read later.
And no, unfortunately it's not possible to get a sitter at this point. Money is tight. My mother has gifted us with some little mommy's day out things and little "classes" that DD can take to get some socialization. I look forward to them.
Gotcha...I think it sounds like you are doing a fantastic job with your kiddos (they are both super cute BTW) and I can understand the stress involved. Glad you have some mommy's day out and classes coming up to help you get some time to yourself too---thoughtful gift from your mom.
Thanks Like I said, most difficult, rewarding job on the planet.

Mechanicsgirl, I totally hear ya. Fitting in Bump time in bursts through the day is doable when you're a SAHM, but getting real "me time" when you can get away from the 24/7 aspect of your job can be challenging, especially on a tight budget when you can't necessarily afford MDO or a baby-sitter!
My UO: I think working moms have it easier than SAHMs. Not that either of our "jobs" are easy at all...but still.
ONYD MG! Not this again.
I aim to please
No, It's the UO thread, which is why I posted. I don't want to get into an argument, but since it was asked, this is why:
I am the kind of person who really badly wants to be around to teach my children the things they need to know before school. I WANT to be a SAHM. At the same time, I am 100% the type of person who NEEDS to not be around the same people (be they my children, coworkers, family...whatever) all the time.
Being a SAHM is the most rewarding job I could ever have, but it takes everything in me not to get frustrated and impatient because I need some alone time and just can't get it most of the time, or I can't get the chores done that I feel I should because one child needs me or both need me, or I can't finish reading a book to Mia without Ben screaming because I am not looking at him right that second or I have no clean clothes despite having done 10 loads of laundry that week. I would look at work as a welcome reprieve from these day to day tasks every once in awhile. Being a SAHM is constantly overwhelming and yet constantly rewarding at the same time.
On the other hand, I would have hands down said that being a working mom was harder when I had one child. Two children makes it a different ballgame for me.
I have no idea if that made any sense
ETA: I wanted to add that this is my OPINION...it's not fact, and I respect that others have other opinions.
I guess my UO, is that I don't think this is an opinion, I think it's a personal preference. If it was a statement that you were making about all SAHM's, then it would be an opinion.
My personal preference would be to work from home. I'm a home body, I don't care about the socialization of work. I hate working an hour each way away from home M-F full time, and then choosing between spending my entire weekend catching up on house chores, or letting them go for another week to spend more time with DD.

Nikibug, I love you and all but this statement doesn't come off very well.
We bought Max WWWAAAAYYY too much for Christmas and I can't wait to give him everything and have no regrets on how much we spent.
DH and I work REALLY hard to provide a nice home, nice things and a nice future for ourselves and for Max, why not spend money that we make on our son for Christmas?
I think there are other reasons why children learn to be greedy and unappreciative and I'm pretty sure it's not the fault of Christmas.
And if he won't remember anyway, why does it even matter?

I love you too Sharmurph...I knew I would be crossing the line with ya on this one
I guess if that is what you want to spend your money on that is fine, and I should not care what others do with their hard earned money...AND I agree that ther are other reasons people get greedy and unappriciative...I just feel that kids don't NEED that much stuff. I think they appriciate more of what they are given if it is not overdone. If they have tons of stuff, it just gets looked over ya know? Seriously...watch the In The middle episode...It really explains what I was trying to say.
I do apologize...I was rude. It is just a pet peve of mine.
I just feel like when people do that (buy tons of presents) it only teaches the kids to be uber capitalistic and then the coorporations win...guess that is my liberal politics coming out.
I have a really UO. I hope this does not get blown out of proportions. I think most Americans are really dumb and are over the top. They just have the advantage of the world looking up to them for most part because of the achievements of cream of the crop which is 20% and the rest is blah.
As examples, something very basic, they cannot count change correctly without a cashier register (ok, it was invented to make cashiers efficient but that lead to people just forgetting how to count numbers).
At work, I notice that Americans make a HUGE deal about everything that is assigned to them, hold a zillion meetings, discuss over and over and some still do not get it. On the other hand, Asians do their work without noise, do not brag about their work (even though they are contributing more work than their American counter parts). It is a cultural thing and I do believe Americans get less work done compared to their counter parts.
Also Americans talk toooooooooo much and are overly animated in their talks. Most of the work day goes in talking, talking and some more talking about everything under the sun. It definitely took some time for me to understand the culture.
I have another one, I think people who only volunteer and donate during the holidays and think they are just so special and awesome for doing so are lame and need a reality check. People need your help all year long, not just 2 months out of the year.
I wish I could come up with a better description then lame, but words are failing me today.

Well, backstory:
I was raised Catholic, I now don't know what I beleive but I do beleive in the sentiment of the season...ie...giving to those who have not...spending time with friends and family and all around warm fuzzyness that brings people together this time of year. I just wish more people focused on that and doing good for their fellow man than BUYING things and feeding into the whole corporate crap. I feel like today you see so many spoiled kids who don't appriciate anything...I think a best synopsis of my feelings could be summarized on a TV episode...did any of you watch the In the middle Christmas Episode?! I pretty much feel like the mom...SAVOR the ORANGE people! LOL.
I think the commercialization and mass capitilism that has become Christmas is DISGUSTING and I am not even religious. I think most of you will spend too much money on your LOs for the holidays and it will only teach them to be greedy and unappreciative like "most" Americans.
Niki, you know I love you too, but I disagree. I would never say that "most" Americans are greedy and unappreciative. I think with that statement, you should pack your bags and find a better country. I know you hate the capitalist socitey, so find a more appropriate one for your taste.
My parents worked their butts off to give me everything I needed and somethings I didn't. As you know, I am far from an unappreciative or greedy American.
It's not what you buy or give your children that matters. It's how you teach them and guide them.
I think the commercialization and mass capitilism that has become Christmas is DISGUSTING and I am not even religious. I think most of you will spend too much money on your LOs for the holidays and it will only teach them to be greedy and unappreciative like "most" Americans.
Well my UO is that I don't like to judge how others how to spend their money. Apparently this is unpopular around here.
The problem I have with the statement "SAHMs have it harder than working moms" (and that is what you said, not that you find it harder to be a SAHM as opposed to a working mom) is the gross generalization. As other posters have said, it depends on so much... the type of job, the number and personalities of the children, the financial situation of the family(whether you can afford help, etc.). I work 60-70 hours a week. I usually spend two 24 hour periods in the hospital a week. My job is incredibly stressful... sometimes I am responsible for saving peoples' lives, other times I am not able despite my best efforts and they die before my eyes. I am also not someone who "has" to work... I find my career exceptionally fulfilling and derive great pleasure from what I do. Is your life "harder" than mine (whatever that even means)? Maybe it is. But how would you possibly know? So I gues my opinion is that it is shortsighted to ever even have an opinion on who has it harder... we all do what we can, and as long as we respect that neither SAHMs or working moms have it easy, I think we're OK.
I have a really UO. I hope this does not get blown out of proportions. I think most Americans are really dumb and are over the top. They just have the advantage of the world looking up to them for most part because of the achievements of cream of the crop which is 20% and the rest is blah.

I think the majority of the rest of the world view Americans this way, but I strongly disagree that you can generalize ALL Americans that way. There are people like that in every culture, and while there may be more here, I believe they are still the minority.
As examples, something very basic, they cannot count change correctly without a cashier register (ok, it was invented to make cashiers efficient but that lead to people just forgetting how to count numbers).
I agree with this part! I always LOL to myself ( I know that doesn't make sense) when I see the signs helping people figure out a certain % off and people standing there staring at them. I don't think there is anything wrong with it, per say, I just think it's unfortunate.

You're right, I didn't intend to make it a generalization like that. I didn't mean to say that my LIFE was "harder" than yours or anyone else in particular. I meant to say I find being a SAHM harder JOB. I'm not going to pick and choose through each Bumpie and say my JOB (not life) is harder than Bumpie #1, but not bumpie #2, much harder than bumpie #3, but I could never do bumpie #4s job. I have to generalize in some way.
I do believe that as a SAHM of two children less than a year apart is more difficult than the job of most working moms who have 1 child. I also think it's more rewarding, so it is what I choose to do.

I am so freaking sick and tired of people preaching about Christmas. Get over it! Do what you want with your children and leave other people alone. Who gives a crap if they call in X-Mas? Who gives a shiit if they buy their kids a lot of toys. If youa re so concerned about losing the Christ in Christmas than heres an idea... DON'T. Teach your kids what you beleive and shut the eff up. And all of you grinches need to get over Santa, it's fun, if you don't like it, don't participate.
I'm not a Grinch, but we don't celebrate Santa. Regardless, I 100% agree with you. Everyone needs to knock off the judging.

Yeah, it's unfortunate and sucks that you laugh to yourself about people having trouble with math. It reaffirms the fear I have to do math in front of people and have them laugh at me having difficulty. Awesome.

I would say "some" Americans, not most of them.
Also, I don't like when inmigrants complain about the country they are living rigth now. I'm sure when you (in general) migrate to another country is beacuse you are looking (for whatever reasons) a better life.

Girl, you need to embrace your math difficulty! I SUCK at math and count on my fingers when I add and subtract and use stupid elementary school tricks when doing multiplication--I had to take remedial math in college! It's the not trying that is unfortunate!
I'm truly sorry if that offended you. I re-read it and it didn't come off how I had intended.

1. Dr Seuss is amazing.Kids books are SUPPOSED to be silly and fun. And some of his have very good moral story lines too.
2. Saying all Americans are stupid is like saying all Middle Easterners are terrorists and all Chinese make good electronics. Sterotypes SUCK.
3. I believe telling your child Santa is real is a lie and I won't ever do that. Santa is a christmas character like Charlie Brown, Frosty, Mickey Mouse. You can enjoy Santa without him being the one who brings presents.
4. My Unpopop is that I get literally angered when I see news stories where businesses have to change their signs from Merry Christmas to Happy Holidays because someone had a snit fit. Christmas is an actual holiday, its the proper name for the holiday. I don't go flipping out if someone comes up to me and says Happy Hanukkah or Happy Kwanzaa. If that's how I'm greeted I will reply with "same to you". You can respect other peoples religions without having to sacrifice your own. Political Correctness makes my skin crawl.

ita with you, if you can't afford to do it all year long, but are able to do it once a year, that is great giving is giving. It is the people who brag about doing it once a year. I don't think giving of yourself is something anyone should brag about or AW. KWIM?

This. I hate that daycare doesn't celebrate Halloween but "something else", Same with Christmas, they are having a "sharing celebration" or something like that.
At least today I still have my Christmas Party in my office

I wish I could come up with a better description then lame, but words are failing me today.
fair enough. (and i always thought i was the only one that watched the middle.)
merry christmas!
I think the majority of the rest of the world view Americans this way, but I strongly disagree that you can generalize ALL Americans that way. There are people like that in every culture, and while there may be more here, I believe they are still the minority.
Deleted because it made no sense
And I'm an inmigrant too.
LOL Merry Xmas to you too!
Uh...Last check it is a UO thread...
For the love of GOD shut your asskissing pie hole...When did you turn into such a biotch. Oh wait...when you moved over to 12-24 that's right.
I know you are not a grinch love. Because you don't expect other people to follow suite. I meant grinch in the sense of trying to ruin others fun.
Caty-I love you but this makes me mad...The 'beauty" of living here is that I am allowed to have this opinion and NOT be foreced into exile!
I just don't get why you would live here if you hate it so much. If it turned into a socialist country, I'd leave. I'm not attacking your opinion. I'm questioning why you would live in a country you hate.
i'm sure you meant to say "some" americans, right?
and i'm also going to guess that you get all pissy when someone makes a sweeping generalization about your culture, whatever it may be.
Jesus, calm the feck down, psycho.
Damn my 4th grade teacher for belittling me for not knowing my times tables and giving me a complex. Sorry I read your post the wrong way.
Caty-I dont HATE our country...I just think it could be better
KWIM?
Wow, Merry Christmas.
This. I hate that daycare doesn't celebrate Halloween but "something else", Same with Christmas, they are having a "sharing celebration" or something like that.
At least today I still have my Christmas Party in my office
