If you found out your licensed daycare had been put on "evaluation" (step above probation), what would you do? And if your child was the source of a report filed by the state inspector but you were unaware of the issue, what would you do?
I finally received subsidized child care benefits but I had to sign what basically looked like a waiver form stating that I knew they daycare was being evaluated and that knowing this, I choose to leave my daughter enrolled at said daycare leading me to investigate why...
I've gone through the State site which documents all the reports and evaluation results. I think the issue is that the daycare is having a higher than normal number of injuries mostly due to adult negligence. The examples I found included child injury on a field trip not reported by daycare, unattended children in restroom - child injured before adult could intervene, Adult unaware of child's location so a door dragged over the child's foot resulting in serious injury needing surgery, scissors within reach of children in the 12-18 month room. All within the last 6-8 months. And this is just what ranked high priority. There was a whole host of medium-high and medium priority violations.
I'm angry about this and that the parents are unaware in general... but I'm even more angry at a report in which I think my daughter is the child mentioned. It reported that a child in the 6-12 month room was given table foods when the care sheet indicated formula and purees only. Since the care sheets in the room are posted for all to see on the door it's not hard to realize my daughter is the youngest and has those exact instructions on her care sheet (she's lacking in teeth which is why table foods are not included yet). Also the random bad indigestion nights she was having stopped about the same time as the report was dated (about a month ago). This would not be the first time (or second or third or fourth time...) they have failed to follow LO's diet and I'm aware of the break in diet. Who knows how many other times they've gone against parental and doctor request in LO's diet?
I can understand from a business point of view not telling the parents that the daycare is on "evaluation" but if my child is the source of a report to the state shouldn't I have been informed? Especially with something as crucial as dietary issues? LO has reflux, milk and soy allergies and a whole host of food allergens she's never been exposed to yet per the request of her GI who wants to postpone their introduction as long as is possible. The daycare has the documentation from both the pediatrician and the GI on LO's dietary restrictions along with the care sheet that I update every month.
I would LOVE to transfer LO to another daycare but the one I have been patiently waiting for has us scheduled to enter next August (and we've been on the list since November 2009!). LO's not on any other waiting list but she will be by the end of next week... What to do in the mean time though?
Re: I am throughly upset with daycare - very long
Ditto.
Nearest family is 2.5 hours away and all my friends are college PhD students and none of them are parents. So even if I traded off work times with them, they wouldn't know the first thing about taking care of a baby. Also the only two who might be interested leave town on Saturday to be with their families.
I'm going to start calling around to daycares in the morning but with the subsidized child care I am required to give 2 weeks notice before pulling my child out of the daycare and I have to have the new daycare lined up already. If I just allow LO to take 2 weeks absences on the subsidized child care it puts me close to the 30 day limit of absences allotted for sickness and travel/vacation days.
As much as I hate to do it, LO's best care at the moment is probably at the current daycare. We've had no more nights of strange and random indigestion for a month now and it was happening 1-2x a week. Also she doesn't come home acting like she's hungry which she does when she's with her father for the day or like she was when she first trasnferred to the room she's in now (father lives 3.5 hours away and so is not an option for temporary childcare either and to be honest even if he was I wold trust this daycare more than I do him).
All the information in your OP would be enough for me to start looking for another daycare. Start looking ASAP and get her out of there as soon as possible. But for now, as long as she is okay, it is what it is.
