Blister on LO's lip?

How does this happen?  Any recommended treatment?  Kellymom lists milk blister as a problem on the nipple, not the baby.

Re: Blister on LO's lip?

  • It may not be a milk blister but could still be a blister from breastfeeding (which I assume you are since you were looking at milk blisters?). Your babe might not have a proper latch or doing "lazy sucking". Do you have access to a lactation consultant to check?

  • We bottle feed in general, but are working hard on  BFing.  I guess that probably is due to a poor latch and "lazy sucking."  Sounds about right to me,  Stinker.  We went to an LC last week and I'm going to go next week.  Any tips for poor latch or laziness?

A milk blister is on the baby's upper lip, not the nipple.  If it's in the center of his upper lip - you're fine.  It will come and go for a few weeks and doesn't cause them any pain.  Leave it alone and all will be well!

It is in the center, thank you!  Maybe it's his big ol' lips ;)

  • My LO had a nursing blister and many of my friends said their LO's had them as well.  It fell off after a week or so...no need to worry, it's all normal:)
  • My LO has had several that come and go. It appears, falls off and a new one develops a week or so later. The pedi noticed it and said it was normal. I've never heard of it being a latch problem.

  • My DS has gotten them on and off... it doesn't seem to bother him, and I think his latch is good.  I searched it online and everything I found seemed to think this was normal.

  • milk blister or bleb -- painful blister on your nipple. needs treatment.

sucking/nursing blister -- NON painful callous that develops on middle of baby's upper lip. totally normal. has nothing to do with a 'bad latch.' doesn''t bother baby at all. is really cute. no treatment necessary.

  • I have never heard that a blister is a latch problem. My baby gets them too and she has a pretty good latch, definitely not lazy.

  • My kid gets one in the center of his upper lip because he's a voracious little sucker. Perfectly normal per our pedi.

Let me clarify that "lazy suck" is not a bad thing. I point it out because for a while my daughter had a "lazy suck", where she'd slow down so much, she'd kinda fall asleep and adjust her latch when she woke up quickly. Caused blisters for both of us! Very painful indeed (for me anyway).
