DD doesn't have 4 of her permanent teeth :(

She had extensive x-rays done at the dentist this morning and they showed that she was born without 4 of her permanent molars.

Has anyone ever heard of or experienced this?

The dentist said her baby teeth might last 20 years or so as long as we take really good care of them, but after that she'll have to explore other options.

We'll just add this to the long list of weird stuff (broken arm, broken thumb, MRSA, concussion, anemia, eczema) that DD has had to deal with.

I swear the kid can't just catch a normal cold or stomach virus to save her life. Super Angry

Re: DD doesn't have 4 of her permanent teeth :(

  • My older bro didn't have 2 of his wisdom teeth.

I had 4 of my permanent teeth extracted (my 1st bicuspids) to make room for other teeth. ETA: I also had my wisdom teeth out.  So I only have 24 teeth.

  • I've not heard of that but have heard where people don't get their Wisdom teeth at all.  If her Wisdom teeth come in they would replace a set of molars easily so instead of having them cut out (which is quite foreign to me) just let them come in, since there will be plenty of space for them.  DH had his cut out when he was in his late teens but mine are still coming in /shrug.

I'm no dentist though but its really not as bad as it sounds?

Hmmm, I was born without wisdom teeth so it never occurred to me that they could be replacements. I'll have to check with the dentist about that.

  • My college boyfriend didn't have two of his adult teeth (not wisdom teeth, normal teeth). He had a bridge done so you never knew the difference.

  • A co-worker was born without 2 of front teeth (not sure which ones), you can't tell because he has implants.

  • I do not have my 2 eye teeth.  I did have braces to move all my teeth forward and to fix my front teeth from being buck teeth because the eye teeth weren't their to keep them together.  Haven't experienced not having molars though.  But I do just fine missing 2 top teeth.

  • My brother never got a couple permanent teeth but in the lower front. He recently got implants. Luckily, there are so many options for dental work.
  • A girl at work said her husband's family all has this... her kids too.  Not the exact same scenario, but I personally was only born with 3 wisdom teeth (my mom too).  So it happens.

I believe the girl at work said her husband had a fake tooth and I think with her daughter they are doing braces to pull the other adult teeth together to cover the gap.  In her case they are missing one, but it's one of the front teeth.

  • Both myself and my sister only had 3 wisdom teeth.

That poor girl has gone through so much....I just want to give her a big hug!

  • Don't worry- it's not a biggie.  I'm missing two of my teeth (middle molars), I think it is usually genetic.  My grandma was missing like 8 teeth, my mom 4 and me 2.  I still have my 2 baby teeth, I'm 29 years old.  Once they do fall out I can get a bridge or implants.  By the time your DD has to decide they'll probably be able to grow new ones of something cool :)

  • I have this. Funny thing is my brother who is 13 months older then me has the same baby tooth... my uncle is a dentist and he told us that at some point in our lives it will die and get black and will have to be removed... they will put an implant in its place... Nothing to worry about now, just make sure she is brushing them nice and good and flossing when she gets to that age..

Will be sending healthy child vibes her way.. she needs a break from that... maybe get her a bubble?

ETA: spelling errors and just stupid grammar! WTH is wrong with me?! Today = bad spelling/grammar day

  • I had 6 of my permanent teeth removed when I was 8, and that isn't counting my 4 wisdom teeth removed in my 20s.  I still have a pretty smile :)

Also, DH still has one of his baby teeth (the bicuspid maybe) that has never fallen out and he has the permanent one above it still.

It's weird how things work out.

  • I was born without 1 of my permanent molars.  I'm 27 and my baby tooth is still fine.  My cousin is my dentist and has never mentioned to me that I'll have to explore other options, although it's in the back and I'm assuming it would be as easy as cutting it out.  It's never been a problem for me at all so far.

ETA: I don't think wisdom teeth would be replacements.  My wisdom teeth still came in and had to be cut out as they normally would.

  • I was born without two middle molars on my right side, one on the top and one on the bottom.  My baby teeth fell out when I was a teenager, so I had braces to move the teeth forward to fill the gaps.

I did however have all 4 wisdom teeth, but had to have them removed despite having a little more room with the other two gone.  I've never known a difference, and have no issues with chewing or otherwise.

DH was born without a lower front tooth and still has a baby tooth there.  It's capped now.  Funny story about that.......the crown broke a couple of years ago and his tooth fell out in the kitchen........the cat chased the tooth like it was a new toy.  Yeah, we are redneck like that.

  • My college roommate at UD was born without two of her front side adult teeth and had to have implants put in while she was a teenager. Obviously, that was a cosmetic issue. I'm not sure if they would bother doing this for molars??

  • I have three baby teeth still, never got one of my 12 year molars and never got any of my wisdom teeth.

I don't have any problems!! And my baby teeth are still here, 30 years later.  It's hereditary!
