Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Newborn Cough

Hey ladies,

My DS developed a cough on Saturday afternoon. I took him to the pedi on Monday and there is little that can be done to treat babies this young (almost 5 weeks). She told me to use saline drops to clear his nasal passages and that should help his cough.

My LO has been going through so much lately with acid reflux and formula allergies. We are also testing his stool because it has been runny and mucousy (sp?). Now he is dealing with this cough.

I was wondering if any of you ladies have dealt with a cough with your LO this young? If so, what was the treatment used and did it help? I cringe everytime he does it because it seems to be causing him so much pain. I pray that he gets better soon. TIA

  • when I went back to work I noticed that my baby was wheezing a lot so I took him to urgent care since the drs office was closed and they said his lungs were fine and didn't hear anything, basically said it's ok to be hysterical the first 3 months, I was really upset because I didn't think I was being hysterical. Over the next 2 weeks he developed a cough and was sneezing, had a wcc and she also said she didn't hear anything he was probably fine with a cold. He got really congested the next week and I was using a humidifier and nose drops sucking his nose constantly and the cough wasn't get better and he was having trouble breathing so I made an appointment and a different doctor ended up seeing him since it was last minute and had a chest x-ray done just in case but thought he was fine turns out he had bronchitis. I am glad I kept pushing the issue despite the people that kept telling me he was fine when I knew he wasn't it. He is on omoxycillin (sp?) now and it's getting better. If you bf after he coughs you can try to bf him so the warm milk can soothe his throat I'm not sure what you would do with formula, guessing the same thing

Thanks ladies for the information and support. If it doesn't get better soon I will definitely push for them to do more for my son. I can't stand to see him sick.

  • R started coughing on Thursday. I was worried because my older son was just recently sick with a nasty cough. Thursday night the cough became worse and he started to wheeze, so we brought him to the pedi on Friday morning. The Dr listened to his chest and heard the wheezing and diagnosed him with bronchiolitis. He has him on nebulizer treatments (breathing treatments) 3 X's a day. We called on Sunday morning since he still did not sound better (in fact, he was getting worse), and he prescribed an oral steroid in addition to the breathing treatments. He also gave us prescription nose drops to help with the overwhelming mucus.

It's Tuesday and R is still sick :(  The doctor said it could take as long as 2 weeks to clear up, maybe more. We really could only treat the symptoms (wheezing in his lungs) at this point, since it's a viral infection. It is so awful. My poor little guy is miserable and mommy is even more miserable.

Do you have a humidifier? Sometimes dry air can irritate the throat and maybe a humidifier will help ease his cough a bit? If you don't, I read somewhere that putting big bowls of water around the room will also help humidify the air. Is he wheezing at all? Keep monitoring him. If something doesn't feel right (if his cough gets worse or you hear him start to wheeze, etc). don't be afraid to call the pedi.

It sucks so much when they get sick this little. I hope your LO feels better soon.

Wow, thanks I hope your LO gets better soon also. It is so scary for them to be so sick at such a young age.

We do have a humidifier in our bedroom where DS sleeps. He is not wheezing at this point. My pedi thinks its the drainage from his nose that is irritating his throat and causing the cough. She said his throat is red and that I can give him infant tylenol for a sore throat along with the saline drops. I am having a hard time getting him to eat (I FF). He acts as if his throat hurts to much. I will continue to monitor him and take him back to the pedi if things get worse or fail to get better. Thanks for your feedback.
