beco vs. ergo - help me decide

I currently have a moby and a bjorn.  the bjorn was a hand me down and its just not cutting it for me.  I love my moby but DS is getting heavy and big and really likes to move around.  I feel like he's getting frustrated that he can't move his arms more and with his weight I feel like it gets loose way too fast.  I am asking for a carrier for xmas and I know that I want something that DS can move his arms freely, holds him up securely, and places more weight on my hips then my back.  I think both the ergo and beco fit those descriptions but I'm not sure if one is better then the other.  if you've tried both or rec another...i'd be very appreciative of any tips!

thanks!

Re: beco vs. ergo - help me decide

  • I've not actually tried either so I really shouldn't be answering - lol.  But...

Neither is better although some find that one fits them better than the other.  Any chance there are stores near you that carry them so you could try them on?  I know Buy Buy Baby carries the ergo.  Check Beco's website as they have a list of stores that carry them.

I'd probably get the beco - mostly because it has cuter prints and my friends that do buckles seem to like it better.

  • I have a Beco Butterfly 2 and an Ergo.  The BB2 allowed me to do my first ever back carry, as the inner harness makes it pretty much idiot-proof ;)  It's nice to be able to put LO in and switch front to back or vice versa without removing the carrier, which the Ergo can't do.

I do find that because of the harness the BB2 doesn't breathe quite as well as the Ergo, so it's just a bit warmer.

I have one of the organic Ergos without the front pocket ( Sad ) but most Ergos do have a pocket, whereas the BB2 doesn't.

Comfort wise I find them to be pretty similar.  I had to fuss a bit to get everything adjusted the first time, but once they were set up they're almost as comfortable as a wrap for me.

Most of the differences are pretty minor, and are really personal preference.  It's hard to say one is "better" than the other.

  • I don't have an outside baby yet, but I found this helpful: https://www.theportablebaby.com/carrierfeatures.html

Also, if you have a BW group in your area, they may have a "library" that you can try on carriers from.

  • It's a personal decision- definitely try them on first. It all depends on your body and how you like to wear.

I thought I was going to get a Pikkolo but ended up with an Ergo because it worked with my body and my LO better. Try to find somewhere to try a few on!

  • Honestly, I'm not that pleased with my ergo. I purchased it thinking that it would be the perfect carrier for us, but it's not as comfortable as a wrap and my son HATES it. I much prefer either a wrap or a ring sling, as does my 10 month old. I've adjusted the ergo numerous times and just can't find a way to make my baby enjoy being carried in it. If I could go back, I'd save the money and buy another wrap or ring sling (or maybe feed my cloth diaper habit).

  • I don't think you could go wrong with either. :D We LOVE our Ergo with a passion. :)

  • Definitely try them on if you can.  I tried on both the Ergo and the Beco Butterfly 2 and ended up getting the Beco.  I'm very happy with it.  It is supportive enough with my super chunky baby (25 lbs at 7 mos) and it is really easy to switch to a back carry even for a beginner.

Not to get personal, but what'syour body type? I have a long torso and I'm worried about the fit (I have an ergo on the way).

  • The website paxbaby.com was suggested to me. You can rent carriers from them for two weeks. It is $9 per carrier, which I think is a steal to be able to find the one that works best. I also called the owner, Jillian, and she helped me to choose three SSCs that would work the best for my body type (Im plus sized). She was very friendly and super helpful.
