The other day, I was reading about the 19th-century biologist Asa Gray and mentioned to DH that I like Asa. I like very few boys' names, so I though it was important to mention it, even though we are a long, long way from giving Amalia any siblings.
He said it was nice, but thought it sounded like a girl's name. Do you agree?
fwiw, I realize that anyone named Asa (AY-suh) will probably be called ASS-uh a few thousand times in his life. That doesn't bother me, at least not now, when it's all hypothetical.
Re: Asa *clicky*
Asa was my top pick for a boy's name for years. I knew an Asa in HS and he was such a great guy. He was on the hippie side but a very nice person
We had thought about the nn Ace too
I think the "a" ending is what makes it sound feminine, even though I know that it is a boy's name.
If I were you, it would bother me that both my kid's names start and end with "A". I would feel like there was a a theme starting. And I detest theme names.
The "ass-a" thing would also bother me any time I actually heard it out loud.
And finally...doesn't it mean snake? I guess it isn't the worst meaning, but I think of snakes when I hear it.
ETA: ok I can't find anything online about it meaning "snake"...so now I feel dumb and I'm wondering where I got the impression that it means that.
reminds me of the charactor on One Life to Live- Asa Buchanan. My mom always watched that show- had me tape it when I got home from school so I watched it while it recorded. LOL
But TO me its a guy's name just because of that charactor.

I have this same association, it's the first thing I thought of actually. It's not a bad name, but I'm not sure I'd name my son that because of the teasing factor (a$$, it kinda sounds like a girl's name, etc). And I agree with pp that Amalia & Asa is too matchy.
I love it. There was a soap opera character named Asa about 25 years ago, and I always thought it was a cool name.
Edit: Yes, other people mentioned this.

This name always makes me think of Nancy Drew's The Sign of the Twisted Candles. No one ever died in those books but this 100 yr old man.
It is so old man to me that it could never be feminine
You're thinking of asp.
Asa is most definitely a boy name. I like it a lot!

I had the biggest crush on a guy names Asa in middle school, ahaha. He was never bullied, and was in fact one of the most popular guys.
It's a terrific name. Love the nn. Ace.
