Help with Cecilia

If we have a girl I would really like to honor my mom.  Her first name is Sandi/Sandra...we don't like this as a first name, and it really does not flow well as a middle name.  I would like to use her middle name, Cecilia instead.  My pick is Kendall Cecilia, but DH HATES Cecilia.  I thought maybe we could name her "Lia" as a shortened version.  He likes the name Lia, but as the traditional spelling, Leah. Help me!  DH is so stubborn, does anyone else have a suggestion or a variation of either of these names to honor my mom with?

Re: Help with Cecilia

  • What about just Cece? I would say Cassandra, but that has horrible flow with Kendall. And Leah is a nice name, it doesn't have to be spelled exactly the same to honor your mother.

  • MNs are so rarely used. If I were you, I'd just talk to YH about how important it is to you to honor your mother with this child's MN. It's not like he'll ever have to call her Cecilia. If her name's Kendall, that's what she'll ALYWAYS be called. I think both partners should agree upon the name, yes---but DH and I were able to compromise on several names by allowing them as MNs.

  • Well I don't know what to say.  I think Cecilia is far and away the nicest name of any of those you mentioned.
  • What about looking for names with similar meanings to Sandra or Cecelia?

I see the St Cecilia is the patron of musicians and music, so what about names like Lyric or Cadence? Cecilia means blind one, so maybe names like Lucille (the patron st of the blind)?

Sandra can be a nn of Alexandra.  It also means "defender", so here's a list of names with similar meanings:  https://www.20000-names.com/guardian_names_defender_names_female.htm

If DH won't budge, what about a compromise?  If you choose the MN, he chooses the FN?

Me too.  But I agree with pps - the MN will barely be used, so maybe point that out to your DH?

  • I am having the same issue. My grandmother passed just before our wedding. She was Cecilia Elizabeth. I have always wanted to honor my grandmother and  I love that name, but DH just isnt into it. I suggested the following:

Same initials, Celia, Lia as a middle name, Using her middle name. We have decided to go with the same initials (Charlotte Elizabeth) HTH

  • I love the name Cecelia/Cecilia- But im clearly biased
  • I will have to agree with your DH...HATE Cecilia. Maybe give your daughter your mom's initials as another poster recommended. I LOVE Kendall and Lia/Leah.

  • I am obviously biased, but I love Lia. Your H won't be calling her by her middle name, so I'd just talk to him about how important it is for you to honor your mom and hopefully he'll understand.
