Girls name

We are having issues with names. I want something to do with his name and he wants something to do with my name.

My name is Katharine

His name is James Brian

I have always loved the name Maddox..

He likes the name Katharine Jamison...what would we call her???

I like Jamison Maddox and call her Maddox.

Any ideas or thoughts?

Thanks

Re: Girls name

  • Maddox makes me think of Angelinas son so it is more of a boy name for me, so is Jamison...Jamison would not be a bad middle name though. I like Katharine Jamison and call her Katharine or Katy or Kathy or Kate...whatever you would like

  • I really don't like when people name their child something, and call them by their middle name.  If you want that to be the name they go by, then just give it to them as a first name.  It's just a huge pet peeve of mine, and for that reason, I'm glad my baby is a girl.  It was a huge fight with DH's family about how our son would have his name as a middle name, not first.

Katharine Jamison is really pretty, I think.  And there's a million nicknames for Katharine, so she could go by anything, not necessarily what you go by.  Katie, Kat, Kit, Kate, Kathy.  Or if you wanted to go with Jamison as the first name, you could call her Jamie.

I don't like Maddox at all for a girl though.  Much too masculine.

  • I feel like Jamison Maddox is a little too masculine for a girl.  IMO, I think Katharine Maddox would be a nice compromise, but you lose out on incorporating his name.

  • I'm okay with truly androgynous names, but I don't think Maddox fits the bill there--that's 100% male.  So I definitely wouldn't use that.  Jameson might be okay.  Might.

So in that case, I think Katharine Jameson works, or if you like Maddox, why not use a derivative of that like Madeline or Madison?

  • ...Or you could also do a female derivative of Brian like Brianna.

  • hmmm.... i agree JNBrickey;  with the middle name thing.... DH is Larry Nicholas and has been called Nick since birth? its just confusing, and he hates it.

I like the maddox, pax, dax, etc. but its seems to be for a Boy, Maddox is a boy.

I have a friend (they are half greek) little girls name is Katerina (cat-a-rina NOT katrina) and they call her Kat.

    James- Jamie or Jaime

    Brain- Brynn

    Catharine-  so many "C: choices

I'm Lauren,   and ill use that most likely for my girls middle name.

  • This is something DH has said to me several times, and I think it makes sense. Assuming you are married, the baby will already have his (last) name, so it makes more sense to give the baby a first or middle name from your side of the family.

For example our LO will be named Elijah James, as James is my fathers first name, which he never uses.

  • You can tell by our girls name that we are not anti 'boys' names for girls, but I think Maddox for a girl is a little to masculine. I like the other option better. But I did think of Jenna Jamison when I first read Jamison as well. I don't think it really matters if you really love the name, and some people might not even get the connection, but I thought I'd mention it just in case you hadn't thought of that and it bothers you.

Good luck with the name hunt! lol

  • Maddox sounds too masculine for a girl. What about Jamie or Kaitlin or something similar?
  • I'd go with something like Jamie/Jaime before Jamison--I also liked PP's suggestion of Caitlin/Kaitlin/etc, or Brianna.  Brianna Kate actually sounds quite pretty, and would incorporate both your names.

I could see Jamison being a great name under these circumstances if you were having a boy, as it literally means "son of James"...but no girl should be labeled "son of" anything.

I completely agree.  I think if you are going to go with a more masculine name, it needs to be mixed with something feminine (like pp using Raphael and Celine together).
