Clicky Poll & question for those medically in the know

Just curious.  In my c/s I started crying shortly after they started.  Felt fine physically (well, as much as one would with half their body numb), and they were actually joyful/emotional/excited tears because I knew I was going to meet DS so soon.  My friend, who had a breech baby and resulting c/s, also had some tears on the table.  We both had the same experience of the anesthesiologist getting rather nervous and asking us how we felt/were doing.  So, I was wondering - is that sometimes some sign of imminent pressure drop or some such?  Just kind of curious - it wasn't medically related in either of our cases (that I'm aware of), and I figure for various reasons it's can't be uncommon, but both of us got that same reaction.

  • I didn't, but I think it was because I was so exhausted and I was finally comfortable after a lot of pain in the couple of hours leading up to the CS. I was crying at that time though! DH had held it together well the whole long labor, when we got in the OR is when he started crying.

  • Maybe they were afraid you were going to freak out on the operating table and were seeing if they should give you some meds. Understandably, people get anxious about being cut open while they are awake and I believe they often give women a sedative during c/s to help with that.

I started crying when they told me I would need a c/s and I'm pretty sure someone slipped something into my IV because I magically calmed down once they got me into the OR.

That makes some sense - thanks!

  • I started crying but then immediately started asking dh (who has no medical background) if he thought 36 weeks was long enough so I'm pretty sure the dr knew exactly why I was upset. Definately wasn't at my sharpest asking my non-dr husband if he thought DD was going to be ok when I was in an OR full of qualified medical people but I blame that on the drugs and stress : )

  • I was like Iris.  I cried when they the Dr. told me I was going to have a CS, and I cried all the way to the OR, but think I stopped when they started messing with me.  It was pretty surreal for me and my memory of it isn't the best.  We hadn't slept since Friday and it was a Monday morning.  That coupled with a shot of Stadol on Saturday night, Epi and numerous other additions to my IV (I had to have something added to the IV so I could physically lay flat - the nurse had me hunched in some funky positions and by the time CS came, I had such bad pains in my chest from the positions that I couldn't lay flat) and it was a fuzzy scene.
  • I cried a lot. It was an emergency c/s and I was terrified that he wouldn't be alive when he was born. It took him forever to cry. And of course when he did, I cried even more! I was super emotional throughout the whole procedure.

  • I didn't cry, but the moment they put the stuff in my epidural, I passed out. I woke up two hours later. The anesthesiologist said that he had to reverse the meds he gave me because they were too much for me.  It was a shock  when I woke up and found out that I had missed the whole thing. It was not what I expected.

  • I wanted to cry tears of joy and even attempted to, but I just couldn't.  Not sure if was from exhaustion, fear, dehydration, or a combo of the 3.  I was really out of it after my c/s and everything felt surreal.  My head was swimming.  I really felt like I was having an out of body experience.  And even now looking at the pictures, I can't believe that's me on the table.

    This for me too

I was so tired and emotionally drained that I just wanted the whole stupid birth process over with so I could sleep and get something real to eat.  My mom and DH were bawling in the OR, but I just laid there basically numb

  • No the tears didn't start flowing until I heard her first cry, and it still makes me emotional thinking about it because she is such a blessing....
