BW questions

I don't like the homemade mei tai I have (it doesn't support her head) and borrowed a Moby to see if I want to use one with dd.  I have an Ergo for when she has much better head control.  I've been having to hold her all day long and try to care for ds and clean the house, so needless to say, I need help!

First question is: at what age can I do a front carry with legs out?  She seems a bit too big for the newborn carry where her head and legs are all tucked in, but she is still learning to use her neck.

Second question is:  she seems to like to look forward and I'm not comfortable doing a back carry yet.  Is the kangaroo carry something recommended?  I thought there was a problem with front carrriers hanging the baby by the pelvis?

Thanks for any help I get.  I want to wear her a lot, but feel so intimidated with all of the carriers and wraps and can't get the wrap instructions right.  Sigh.

Re: BW questions

  • For the mei tai, you could make a hood to go with it to help hold her head.

The moby, you can do legs out whenever you think she is ready.  For Grace that was 2 weeks.

I don't think a kangaroo carry would help with her wanting to look out, but a hip carry would do the trick (and of course it's not safe to do a back carry in the moby)

Not all front facing carriers are bad for babies hips (there are a couple that put LO in a good position, unlike the bjorn), but I still don't recommend them because there is no way for LO to hide from the world when they become overstimulated.

  • You can definitely do legs out if she seems to like it better.  The great thing about wraps is that they can easily be scrunched to accommodate a narrower "spread."

There is a front facing carry you can do with the moby - it's the one where basically baby sits cross legged in the cross passes and then the 3rd pass comes up over the bum and legs like a seat.  Keeping the legs in the wrap keeps a good position.  The downside is that it's kind of awkward feeling for the wearer since her weight would be hanging off of you kind of oddly.  But she might be small enough still that it's not too bad.

If you ever want to try a woven for a high back carry, let me know - I might be able to hook you up ;-)
