Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Sleep Training this late - ?

AGH!!!  I can't believe we've gotten ourselves in this position.  I was a HUGE stickler about putting the boys down awake and letting them fall asleep on their own from a v. early age.  But all that wisdom was somehow lost and we have a 10 month old who can't fall asleep on her own.  It makes for a very long night trying to get her down - bottles, rocking, singing, putting her in her highchair (she likes to fall asleep there)...So it's time to start sleep training.

Anyone train this late?  How long did it take?

Please spare your flames - we wouldn't ignore a crying child for 2 hrs - but we need to do something.

Re: Sleep Training this late - ?

  • i actually just started w/ds thursday night....so, its been 3 days so far. the bad habit i let him create was to eat a bottle to go to sleep.......so he was super dependent on that bottle to soothe him asleep. i knew sooner or later i'd need to break that bond.

i wouldn't say he's trained at this point but it's a work in progress. i've noticed that at night and when he stirs during the night its been less resistence on his part then his naps during the day. i figure it's b/c it's light during his naptime and he can look around and see more stuff whereas at night it's totally dark in his room.

  • We have only gotten LO's sleeping sorted in the last two weeks. We were co-sleeping (after a large 7.1 earthquake I felt more secure having him in my room) and he would wake 3-4 times a night and constantly want to be breastfed. I stopped feeding him to sleep and through the night cold turkey one night, as well as putting him back in his own room. The first night he messed around in his cot for two hours before going to sleep, but I stayed in the room with him sitting on a chair where he could see me, and so he didn't cry. After two weeks I am still sitting in his room while he goes to sleep, but now it takes about half an hour and he is finally sleeping through the night. It actually was a lot easier than I thought, I had worked myself up a bit thinking how dreadful it would be. I think you just need to be consistent and persistent. Good luck!

  • We are just starting the sleep training here.  It seemed like it was starting to work pretty well but our schedules with the holidays have been thrown off a bit.  We really need to get back in the groove of things.  DS was still not sttn, but it was getting a bit better with less wakings thoughout the night.  I have a variety of bad habits on my end.  I am praying that it will work, even if it takes longer than I hoped.
