kmeek and other early teethers

How did you know your LO was teething? Lizzie has started drooling a lot and chewing on her hand til its red. I felt around on her gums and I really don't feel anythinh. Could this just be her finding a new toy (her hands)?

Not sure even how to know when J is teething. He does all of this too. I felt his front gums and they feel sharp, but I've never felt any other baby gums, so I don't know what to compare them to or how they're supposed to feel.

  • LO can teethe for literally months before they develop any teethe. Your DD is most likely teething.

  • I will be interested in seeing what others have to say.  DH started teething at 3 months, and DS will be 3 months pretty soon here.  He has started drooling, getting fussy (which is not like him), and chomping on his pacifier like it's going out of style.  But I really have no idea how his gums should feel either.

  • My LO was drooling a lot and chewing on her hands in addition to suddenly screaming at times without anything but nursing making her feel better.  She suddenly wanted to nurse ALL the time but was using me more as a pacifier rather than actually drinking much milk (then she would spit up the milk she did drink at times, as she was already full).  However, her pacifier was not satisfying her.  She has 3-4 small white bumps on her front lower gum now.  However, we could not see that at first.  My mom said she may be teething when I described a particularly horrendous day which led to me calling the on call doctor who said to give Infant Tylenol to see if it helped.  It helped a lot!  I thought it was way too soon (she was 6 weeks) for teething, and I was concerned there may be another issue, as her temp was higher than normal (99.5 when she normally runs 98.3-98.7 rectally), so I took her to the pediatrician the next day.  By the appointment, 2 white bumps had appeared on her gums, and he said she is teething!  He also said the teeth may not break the gum line for a few months, and she will likely have the pain when they are moving (spurts of a few days likely here and there).

Baby Orajel, Tylenol, and teething tablets have been helpful.  I decide which to give based on the apparent severity of her pain.  The worst days I give Tylenol and a bit of Orajel to help while it kicks in (btw, I discussed all options with my doctor, so make sure your LO's doctor feels these are safe for your LO of course).  If she is just drooling and chewing a lot and a little fussy, I do the teething tablets (2 of them - directions say 3-4, but she doesn't need that many).  They say to disolve under the tongue, which is hard at this age (my LO is 2 months now), so I put one under her tongue and immediately give a pacifier, which makes her suck and therefore dissolve the tablet.

Also, there are "orthodontic" pacifiers available.  My LO now prefers these over the Soothies she used to love or any other style, so they must help!  HTH!

  • Oh, and the teething toys you put in the fridge or freezer as well as a toy with beads for teething seem to help her, but her little mouth is so small she cannot use them long unless I hold it for her and rotate it frequently for her comfort!

highly unlikely you would feel anything in the back-the first teeth are the top and bottom fronts.

  • Sorry I meant like the back side of her front gums on the bottom. Got so excited I got a little incoherent with my typing

  • Wet some baby washcloths, and freeze them in a ziplock baggie.

When they are frozen, your LO's will love gnawing on them.
