Diapers?

how do you pick the "right" diaper? I mean are the brand names that much better than the store brand? Why are pampers sooo much more expensive than luvs? Huggies?

We are trying to buy something BR every time we go to the store, so its not a huge expense as it gets closer. (Diapers in all sizes, wipes, rash stuff, baby wash, onesies, things like that)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: Diapers?

  • It all depends on you, and especially your LO. We started out with Huggies... but then found out they leaked too much, in comparison w/ Pampers. Every time we tried an off-brand, (Like WalMart or SamsClub/Costco), our poor DS would break out in chemical rash. So we didn't really have much of a choice.

We are going to try different things with this LO, too, just to see if maybe we CAN use generic, as long as there are no massive leaks and no rashes, just because it would be nice to save money on diapers. (And like you, we'll be starting to stockpile all sizes and other things, very soon ourselves. We did the same w/ DS, too!)

  • Good question - someone told us to do the same thing, except to buy a pack of diapers every time we go to the grocery store to spread it out. I haven't done it because I just don't know how I can have any idea what will fit our baby!

  • Pampers and Luvs are made by the same company, Luvs is their "economy" line :-)  MH and I were guardians of our niece when she was an infant and we used the Target brand diapers and had no problems with them.
  • Yet another subject where every LO fits differently.  My personal preference is Costco diapers.  Super cheap and they have an awesome large elastic waist band so I never have leaking/blowouts.    Costco brand is the same as Huggies actually.  I hate Pampers.  I hate their smell, fit, price...  But, I have a ton of friends that swear by Pampers too.  I think the best idea would be to buy a few of each and see what works for you and your LO once he/she arrives.  Also, you never know if you'll need newborn sizes or size ones right from delivery.  Depends on birth weight.
  • We used Pampers for G when he was an infant because everything else leaked. Once he got a little bigger we switched to whatever was cheapest, usually Huggies, Luvs, Target brand or Costco brand. Sometimes Costco sends out coupons for their diapers or Huggies so we usually buy them when they go on sale.

I've bought one package of newborn diapers so far and plan on starting a stockpile once Christmas is over, that way we have a bunch for when this little one comes home. You use SO MANY diapers at first!

  • Pampers are by far the best. It is what the hospitals use. You can try the other brands to see if they work for your baby. But if not, Pampers are the way to go. They are soft, prevent diaper rash, and don't leak. We still only use Pampers. Stock up on coupons!

  • I'm one of Kattyleigh's friends that swears by Pampers. I tried Huggies, Costco, Luvs....none worked. Pampers are the only ones that didn't leak or didn't fill up super fast. Luvs are fine, but I felt like I had to change her a lot quicker when I used them so in the long run it didn't save me any money because I was using more diapers. It really all just depends on the baby.

  • DS used whatever people gave at the shower at first (I had a few diaper cakes), but he kept getting bad rashes from them so we switched to cloth (bum genius) or 7th generation if we were on vacation.  I think it depends on LO.

BRU has them frequently, in the newspaper, or on-line.

  • I plan on registering for a couple of different brands at Target or BRU and then choosing whichever  works best.

I plan on switching to cloth, or at least alternating b/w cloth and disposables.

I'm really interested in Gdiapers, since they are a hybrid and can be used with a cloth or disposable liner.  I really hope they work, they are so cute!

  • I really like Target brand diapers.

The only wipes that don't give DD a rash or Pampers brand. I used to use the Baby Fresh scent, but my pregnancy nose has really been bothered by that scent lately, so I switched to the unscented ones last time.

  • Talk to your friends! All of my friends swear by Pampers. Some prefer Baby Dry, while authors like the Swaddlers, or Cruisers. My mom had to use cloth diapers on me, but I do not have the time to deal with cloth. My DH and I both work full-time and go to school full-time. (I started my Master's a week before I got pregnant).

Due to my skin sensitives I will be stocking up on the Pampers Sensitive. I have friends that I have had to use them and love them. I am hoping that baby does not end up with my sensitive skin, but I would rather have the sensitive skin ones and be able to use them regardless, than stock pile the non-sensitive type and not be able to use them.
