Lukas, yes with a "K"

I went to my family Xmas party last night and everyone was asking about what we plan to name our baby boy.  I told my Dad's cousin Lukas, she has a son Lukas as well.  Her response "As long as you don't spell it with a K, it'll ruin him for life haha."  She said just kidding but it still irked me.  I like the "K" and that way nicknamed Luke will make sense too right?  Am I crazy?

Re: Lukas, yes with a "K"

  • My nn is Becky but I don't spell Rebecca with a K.  If we have another little boy, his nn will be Ike but we're not going to spell Isaac with a K

I'd listen to the other mom.  Since she's already been down this path, she knows what she's talking about.   Spell Lucas with a C

  • FYI - Lukas is the traditional Scandinavian spelling, just not the most popular spelling in this country.

  • I love the name, whether it's spelled with a c or k.    The k spelled doesn't bother me as it's the traditional European spelling which I'm used to.  Having said that, if you do spell it Lukas, it will be misspelled a lot.  I went with the non-traditional spelling for DS and it is misspelled often.

  • If you like it with a k, then spell it that way.  It's not a huge deal IMO.

My friend has a son named Lukas, and so far he's not traumatized, and we all know how to spell his name Stick out tongue

  • I have a friend with a son who spells it Lukas. I thought it was a little strange at first (before I knew it was also a traditional spelling) but now I like it. It's ranked 245 for the boys in 2009, so not really that uncommon. In another 10 years it'll probably be another of the many names that people will ask how to spell whenever they come across it. Like Katherine/Catherine/Kathryn or Sarah/Sara.
  • To me, the spelling Lukas takes the classic look away from the name. Lucas nn Luke still works.

  • I don't generally care for randomly added K's, but Lukas is a legitimate traditional spelling and I think it's fine. I really don't think it will be a huge problem for your son over the years.  A lot of names have a couple of different spelling, and people with those names occasionally have to specify, "It's Katherine with a K", or, "it's Jon with no H".  Doesn't seem like a big deal to me.
  • I really dislike Lukas. I agree it will constantly be misspelled as Lucas, which is the more common spelling.

  • well since her son is named Lukas, I would think she has a pretty good idea of how people respond to the name in your area. I would listen to her. You can definitely name him Lucas and call him Luke if that's your hangup.
  • Unless you're Scandinavian (or another country where the K is common), use Lucas. It will be misspelled forever. I considered the K but I decided against it. We still call him Luke and his name is spelled Lucas.

  • My cousins's son is Lucas, I love the name.... but not with a K. Sounds like Luke-Kas.

  • I think Lukas with a K is fine. I also think Lucas with a C is fine. I also like Luke as a name unto itself (definitely my favorite). I don't think it is necessarily a nickname for Lukas -- after all, it's "Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John." Just like Mark (Marcus), Luke is a standalone name.

I used to be on the "spell it the normal way or he'll be spelling it for life" bandwagon, but when I had my daughter, I gave in to my husband's pressure to spell it the most popular way (there are several "standard" spellings) and EVERYTHING she has received for a gift has spelled her name bizarre ways -- some that aren't even on the SSA list at all.

So the standard spelling argument is moot anymore, I think.

Really? I don't plan on "listening" to any other mom when I choose my kids' names. If I like the name spelled with a K, I'm going to spell it with a K.

  • He'll get the NN Luke regardless. It doesn't have to "make sense" with the spelling. If Peggy can be a NN for Margaret, Luke can be (and IS) a NN for Lucas.

    Spell it correctly.

  • Most people who go by "John" are named Jonathan, not Johnathan, kwim?

On the other hand, as a teacher, I have seen Lukas a few times. I see Lucas more, but Lukas is not unheard of.

Do you realize that most people are not from the country from which their named originated??? lol.

I like Lukas with a 'k'.  The fact is that in these days, no matter what your name is people are going to mispell it or ask you how it is spelled.  I have a friend named Martin and he is asked to spell his name all the time.
