I went to my family Xmas party last night and everyone was asking about what we plan to name our baby boy. I told my Dad's cousin Lukas, she has a son Lukas as well. Her response "As long as you don't spell it with a K, it'll ruin him for life haha." She said just kidding but it still irked me. I like the "K" and that way nicknamed Luke will make sense too right? Am I crazy?
Re: Lukas, yes with a "K"
My nn is Becky but I don't spell Rebecca with a K. If we have another little boy, his nn will be Ike but we're not going to spell Isaac with a K
I'd listen to the other mom. Since she's already been down this path, she knows what she's talking about. Spell Lucas with a C
I love the name, whether it's spelled with a c or k. The k spelled doesn't bother me as it's the traditional European spelling which I'm used to. Having said that, if you do spell it Lukas, it will be misspelled a lot. I went with the non-traditional spelling for DS and it is misspelled often.
If you like it with a k, then spell it that way. It's not a huge deal IMO.
My friend has a son named Lukas, and so far he's not traumatized, and we all know how to spell his name
this. make is easy on the guy.
breastfeeding, cloth diapering, farming mama.
I think Lukas with a K is fine. I also think Lucas with a C is fine. I also like Luke as a name unto itself (definitely my favorite). I don't think it is necessarily a nickname for Lukas -- after all, it's "Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John." Just like Mark (Marcus), Luke is a standalone name.
I used to be on the "spell it the normal way or he'll be spelling it for life" bandwagon, but when I had my daughter, I gave in to my husband's pressure to spell it the most popular way (there are several "standard" spellings) and EVERYTHING she has received for a gift has spelled her name bizarre ways -- some that aren't even on the SSA list at all.
So the standard spelling argument is moot anymore, I think.
Really? I don't plan on "listening" to any other mom when I choose my kids' names. If I like the name spelled with a K, I'm going to spell it with a K.

He'll get the NN Luke regardless. It doesn't have to "make sense" with the spelling. If Peggy can be a NN for Margaret, Luke can be (and IS) a NN for Lucas.
Spell it correctly.
Most people who go by "John" are named Jonathan, not Johnathan, kwim?
On the other hand, as a teacher, I have seen Lukas a few times. I see Lucas more, but Lukas is not unheard of.
Do you realize that most people are not from the country from which their named originated??? lol.
I like Lukas with a 'k'. The fact is that in these days, no matter what your name is people are going to mispell it or ask you how it is spelled. I have a friend named Martin and he is asked to spell his name all the time.
