herniated navel?

Does your baby have a herniated navel?  If so what has your doctor done or said in regards to treatment?  I was told to keep trying to push it it gently and if i felt resistance to take her to the ER...or call them right away.

We were just in this past week (Tuesday) and was told that the fleshy piece sticking out of her navel was a granuloma and she put silver nitrate on it and it went away for 2 days now there is another one! Should I be concerned or just calm down??

Re: herniated navel?

  • Weird.  My DS has a herniated navel (looks like an extreme outie).  Our pedi said that it should go away on its own within a year and not to worry about it.  If it doesn't go away in a year, we can think about surgery.  There are old wives tales involving silver dollars andace bandages, but they are a bad idea.

Oh, it temporarily sticks out further and is harder every time he strains to poop.  Definitely not an ER call for us.

  • like pp DD's doc said it will go away on its own and not to worry about it. In fact he laughs when he sees it, pushes it in and says how cute she looks. He is SO not worried about it.

Friends of ours also have a 2 year old that had one and they said it went away by itself.

    I wouldn't worry about it.

  • My nephew has one and it's pretty darn big. Their pedi told them they will often go away on their own and if it doesn't go away by about 3 years or so, they could do surgery. His sticks out about a full inch and further when he's really upset. Poor guy! Doesn't seem to hurt him though.
