Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Coming over to 0-3, and a question for big boobies!

hey ladies! Our little Piper came into the world on Tuesday night, so we will be joining you here on 0-3!

I was hoping that some of you larger breasted women could recommend a good supportive nursing bra. I am experiencing A TON of engorgement, too the point that I can't even pump b/c they are so swollen. I have a LC coming tomorrow, and am going to try a hot/cold treatment recommended by Medela, I am desperate for some relief! ANYWAY....

What nursing bra are you using, the ones I bought don't even come close to fitting right now. I would say I am somewhere around an H or so? I was a DDDD or F toward the end of pregnancy.  Any advice??

Thanks!!!

Oh, and price DOES NOT MATTER at this point I would empty my bank account for support.

  • First of all, Congrats on your LO! Love her name!!

Second of all, I hear ya on the engorgement woes- been there! It was terrible because DD could not latch properly and I ended up with severely damaged nipples. One thing that would have helped (had I known then) was nursing in all different positions instead of the same ol' cradle every time. But your engorgement should only last a day or two more. You may even wake up feeling more relieved- I hope at least!

I would not buy a bra until your engorgement goes down. Can you just wear tanks for now? They are more comfortable in the beginning anyway, imo.

Okay and third of all, I LOVE my HotMilk bras!!!!!!!! They are seriously both the most comfortable bras as well as the prettiest bras I have ever owned- and normally those 2 things do not go hand in hand. They are so soft and do not irritate sore nips and are very supportive. Looks like they go up to high sizes, too. The only thing is, I would try to find a store that sells them where you can try them on but their website does have sizing guides. Also, they are on sale really cheap on their site right now but those ship from New Zealand so be sure you think they will fit so you don't have to ship back.

  • I got mine in the gift shop at my hospital.  I LOVE IT!  It's called Fancy Free, I've posted a link, also like this website and buy cloth diapers from that site also.  I have the last one on the page and wish I'd gotten 3 of them.  Feels like a sports bra, but gives support.  I prefer under wire bras, this isn't one, and I don't miss the under wire when I wear it.  It's just awsome!

Thanks so much! And btw...Piper's middle name is Claire!

She also had latching issues... She was tongue tied pretty severely and had plastic surgery at about 4 hours old. (Flame is you must) But it took the whole 3 days in the hospital to get her finally latch on. I read that engorgement is really common with LOs who wont latch. I really hope that I wake up tomorrow with some change. I am so miserable right now. I also had an unexpected c-section, so dealing with that pain, and these boobies, I just can't get a break!

I will check out that webpage! Thanks so much for your advice!

  • I felt your pain.  Luckily the engorgement goes away.  Nursing tanks never fit me.  Going bra-less was not an option (I was a 36GG pre-engorgement).

The best I found was a Bravado Original Nursing Bra.  I found the black one runs a lot larger than the leopard print one.

Once you've figured out nursing and your supply regulates, it's OK to go for an underwire one.  For, if it fits properly, the underwire won't touch anywhere that there are ducts.  I've found an Anita and an Elomi bra that fit like a freaking dream.

  • Good luck! I never really found one to fit me (I don't even know what size I need - I have a G that is too small). I've been wearing a Medela sports bra type thing. It's really comfy and it works, although it's not very attractive.

I've also had issues with milk production that I think are related to my breast size. My theory is that the weight is crushing the milk glands. I hope you have better luck than me.
