Babies: 3 - 6 Months

A less than enthusiastic response to solids?

By baby, that is.

We waited until pretty close to 6 months.  We actually started about 3 weeks ago, taking a small hiatus in the middle when work got to be a bit much.  (She just turned 6 mo this week).

Started with cereal.  Ok response.  Not enthusiastic, but would eat it, just required patience.

Tried sweet potatoes.  Ick face.

Tried peas.  I got to see her blow her first raspberry.  With a mouthful of peas.  In my face.  Good times.  Needless to say, ick face.

Just tried bananas.  A fruit.  That has to be a winner, right?

Dear baby Jesus.  The ICK FACE, shuttering, gagging.  Again.

Do you just keep trying to feed them every day despite the closed, tight lips and the shuttering/gagging?

I never expected my child to have this response given how much my husband and I love food.  This has me cornfuzzled.

And I know the ped said that it takes like 18 times to try something before one is either gonna like it or not (or some crazy high number.)

So if you babe didn't take to solids right away, what are you doing?

Re: A less than enthusiastic response to solids?

  • I'm waiting for now.  I think I may try again this weekend.  He did alright with cereal but probably only cause I made it with breastmilk so it tasted somewhat familiar.  But he still was not really trying to eat it.  I tried fruit and he literally did the ICK face and shivered like it was the most disgusting thing in the world.

Honestly- I may just try going to soft table foods and skip the whole puree crap.  He's almost sitting on his own- he's tripoding so I may just go that route.

  • I posted this a few threads down--it's from our baby nurse service that we hired:

Offer rice cereal for three days one to two times a day about an hour after the breast or bottle feeding, so they are a little more hungry and more likely to accept it. However, at first they will wear more than they eat. That is part of the process of learning. They will spit out more than they will typically take in at this stage and that is o.k.
After three days of rice cereal, we will add oat cereal to our menu. So the baby can have either rice or oat cereal once or twice a day for the next three days.
Now, will we add pears to the existing menu of rice or oat cereal. Sometimes I would use the pears as the moisture and add it directly to the rice cereal. You can do it mixed together or separate.
Now our menu consists of rice, oat and pears. Do this for three days for two meals a day.
Now we can add squash to the existing menu for three days. And so on ?Adding a new stage one baby food every three days while intermingling the foods that are already on the menu. This means, after we have added three or four baby foods, the baby does not need to have pears every day, we can pick and choose as long as the new food is on the menu at some point every day for three days. When we are adding a new food we want to make sure that the baby tolerates it well. They may make some funny faces and seem to not like the taste. It takes babies sometimes 10-15 times of trying something new before they truly enjoy it. The key is to continue to give them an opportunity to get used to foods even if they seem like they do not like it at first.
When we say that a baby does not tolerate a food we mean that they have vomiting, severe diarrhea, rash, severe fussiness and gassiness. These symptoms would be cause to discontinue a baby food for several months. Some fussiness is normal as it does take a few days for baby?s digestive system to adjust to these new things that we are offering.
After we have exhausted the stage one baby foods, we can begin having three meals a day in the form of breakfast, lunch and dinner.
This means that breakfast comes about 30-60 minutes after the first morning bottle or breastfeeding. And should consist of a choice of a cereal and a fruit.
Lunch comes 30-60 minutes after the late morning breast or bottle and should consist of a veggie and a fruit.
Supper comes 30-60 minutes after the late afternoon bottle or breastfeeding and can consist of a choice of veggie and a fruit, cereal and a fruit, or cereal and a veggie.
  • DD has no interest either. She makes the ick face if I get it in. But she seals her mouth and doesn't let me anywhere near her with the spoon. I guess we'll just keep trying.

  • I would just keep trying. We've only done peas so far, but it took about 5 times before DS started liking them.
