High-Risk Pregnancy

Any Moms to Be with Crohn's Disease?

Hello!  I'm wondering if there are any other Moms to be out there that have Crohn's Disease.  I am on a number of medications for my Crohn's and my doctor said that I would be having a high risk pregnancy because of this.

I just wanted to connect with others in the same boat as me and see if they were interested in sharing experiences throughout pregnancy.

Hope you have a healthy pregnancy and baby!!! Big Smile

  • I'm lurking from another board and although I don't have Crohn's my husband does and we attend some of the local meetings.  There have been a few women who attended these meetings that said when they were pregnant most if not all of their symptoms went away.  I know not everyone is so fortunate, but there is hope out there that you will have a wonderful, pain free pregnancy.  What meds are you on?  My husband is on methylpred, remicade and lylda (?).  We were concerned about the side effects these meds would have on his ability to conceive, but his s/a came back normal so we are crossing our fingers we will not have many issues.  If you are on pred at all and concerned about the effect on the fetus, I can tell you a very dear friend of mine has severe respirator problems and was on anywhere from 32-60 mg of methylpred throughout her entire pregnancy and she has a VERY healthy 1.5 yr old with no problems.

  • I have an autoimmune disease called Sjogren's syndrome and am also considered high risk when pregnant as it can cause something called heart block in the baby.  It was like PP said- kind of like it went into remission.  I had so much energy!  I hope you can find someone who can share their experiences about Crohn's.

  • I have Crohn's Disease and Hashimoto's Thyroidits.  I stayed on Asacol all through my first pregnancy and through this one.  I had no problems whatsoever with my first pregnancy, and this one I had a few issues but no flareups (knock on wood)  many people pregnant with crohn's actually do better than not pregnant.  I am also considered high risk, but they just watch the baby's growth and placenta (because of my thyroid disease).

  • Thanks for the messages!

psu2002 - You know, I've wondered if there are support groups in my area. I ought to have a look sometime.

It's great to hear that pregnancy might actually give me some relief in my symptoms!  I'm on Cimzia (similar to Remicade), Azathioprine, Sulfasalazine, and Colestipol. (awesome drug for diarrhea)  I was also concerned about our ability to conceive, but I got pregnant the first month that we tried!  I haven't been on pred for a few years, but that is good to know.  It makes me pretty nervous being on all these meds.  Good luck TTC!!!!! Big Smile

kissingthetip - Thanks for sharing!  That is great to know!  I'm glad that everything went okay for you!

I'm glad that things are going good for you overall!!!  If you don't mind me asking, what issues have you had so far? Are they related to your Crohn's? I've read that some women can have bad flareups after giving birth.  Did you have any issues like that after your first?  I hope this pregancy continues to go well for you and baby!!!

  • Hi, I was diagnosed with Crohns after I stopped bfing my DD. I've been on Asacol since then and throughout my second pregnancy without any real issues. My doc didn't consider me high risk due to my Crohns but from other issues I had like placenta previa and high HP. I felt pretty great all through my pregnancy and at 11 months pp still feel fine. My Dr is worried I will experience a flare when I stop bfing again so I'm planning to keep doing it a while longer. Good luck!

Hi!  Wow, I think that's awesome that you've had such a good experience during and post pregnancy!  I also think it's very interesting that you were actually diagnosed with Crohn's after having your first child.  I haven't talked with many others with Crohn's, so I forget that you can be diagnosed at different times.  I've had this since I was 17, but was formally diagnosed 7 and a half years later.  Good luck to you when you stop bfing!!!  I know it doesn't help stop a flare, but if you have Crohn's with bad D, colestipol is a savior for keeping you regular.  I know it's an odd thing to bring up with a stranger, but it literally changed my life. haha.
