I am a newbie so I am still figuring out all the abbreviations and how to follow threads after I post etc. So be patient with me :-)
I love the name Ally, Allie, Aly.
I am a fan of longer names that can be shortened, any suggestions besides Alyssa ( have a family member with this name) Also, what is the best way to spell Ally?
Thanks )
Re: Aly, Allie, Ally...
My favorite name that can be shortened to Allie is Alessandra. Other suggestions would be Allison, Alexis, Alexandra, Alexandria, Alicia.
I have a good friend whose full name is just Allie. I like that spelling the most. I think it can hold its own as a full name.
Allison
Alba
Alanna
Alessa
Alexandria
Alea
*Ally*
For me, the spelling depends on the full name. So if you're Allison, Alli seems like the best spelling. If you're Alexa, then Ally seems better
Ali is the only exception. To me, that should be pronounced like Muhammad Ali
Allison, Alanna, Allessandra, Althea. Alexis,
I like Ali for Allison, and I like Allie for everything else.
My niece is Allie. Just Allie. It's not short for anything. I think that name in an of itself is fine. I also have a friend who is Aly. And again, it's just that. For nicknames, I don't think Alyssa shortens well to Aly (mainly because another niece is Alyssa and she's just not an Aly) but Allison would be the only one I would really think of to shorten to Alli or Ali.

I'm an Allie nn for Allison. Oddly enough, I'm not particular on how it's spelled by others with my name, probably because there were so gosh darn many of us growing up! I think if I didn't spell it like Allison, I'd spell it Alyson over Alison. I like both Allie and Ally, but not Aly or Ali.
I don't understand the previous poster who said that Ally works better for an Alexa than an Allison. That seems arbitrary to me.
As for what names it works for, pretty much anything with an AL in it. I would go to babynamewizard.com and do a name finder for "must have this letter sequence."
My faves, other than Allison, are probably Alessandra, Allegra, and Alice.
I'm an Allison who goes by Allie (there were 5 of us in class one year....). Thankfully the name isn't as popular anymore. I think Allie could stand by itself, but I personally like longer names with nn.
In the past few years I've had an Allison, Alyson, Alexandera, Alyssa, and Aleya who all went by some form of Allie (I like this spelling best).
Other options: Alecia, Alanna, Alayna
