Does anyone know someone personally who sells cars? DH is a good salesperson but his current job (insurance sales) has just tanked over the past several months and he's looking for something new. He was thinking of applying at a car dealership by us that does the who one simple price, no haggle thing. Someone told him that the base is $1500 and then they get a few hundered $ per sale they make. He is planing on going back to school too but was wondering if the hours are too crazy for that. Any advice or personal experience would be very appreciated.
Re: Car Salesperson Job ?
My BIL was a car salesman and yes, the hours are crazy. There's a quota of cars that you have to sell each month (at least at his job, there were), and if you don't get them, you're fired. He worked basically dawn till dusk 6-7 days a week. Once the economy tanked, he wound up getting fired because he didn't make quota.
If he's a good salesman, then maybe it's a reasonable risk, but I personally wouldn't do it.
My dad and uncles have been Car Sale men for YEARS! My grandfather owned a car lot that they all started working on and well they are still in the business. Now with the economy this business has taken a pretty good hit. My dad lives in San Antonio Tx and business is slow he says has been for about a year. But it does have it's moments where it takes off. Tax time etc.
And I suppose your husbands school schedule and possible work schedule will have to be discussed with the dealership he is applying at
My Dh is a car salesman. His pay is off of commision only and the money he makes off of a car he sells has varied from a couple hundred for one car to $2000 for one car. There is definently good money to be made in the business. The only downside is if he doesn't sell any cars in a pay period then he gets his hourly which is only $7.25. There have been checks that have been over four grand and then the next check was like six hundred! The hours at his dealership are rediculous. He works from 8a-7pm four days a week. And from 8am-5:30pm two days a week and then always has Sunday off. He gets to see DD for and hour in the morning and and hour and a half on his early days otherwise she is in bed before he gets home.
Also my DH had no previous sales experience, and has consistently been in the top three sellers each month he's been there (except his first month because he was still figuring everything out).
Hope this helps...feel free to Pm me if you have more questions!
My husband sold cars for 10 years and now he manages a dealership and this is pretty much right on.
