drooling

Does drooling always = teething (or the beginning of teething)?

I noticed last week that she would drool a little and make little spit bubbles, but yesterday she was drooling quite a bit.  Several times, she seemed to have a spit-up but it was long after a feeding and mostly just saliva.  I feel so bad for her because when she's lying down she almost chokes on her own saliva.  Does this mean she's going to start teething?

Re: drooling

  • Drooling doesn't always ?equal teething...I think they start becoming curious about that liquid stuff coming out of their mouths and play with it by making bubbles, etc. lol But of note, the teething process starts way before a tooth actually breaks out. So it is possible that she is starting the teething process. Ethan is doing the exact same thing right now. He isn't fussy though, but it wouldn't surprise me that a baby tooth peeks out sometime in the next month. ;)

  • Not at all, in my experience. Around the time Emma turned 3 months, she started drooling like CRAZY, to the point that she would soak through all her onesies and her chin and neck always had drool. She didn't get her first tooth until she was almost a year old. I might be making this up, but I could have sworn I read somewhere that it takes them awhile to get the hang of swallowing all the saliva they produce. I would say the intense drooling stopped by the time she was 5 or 6 months old, and like I said, the first tooth still did not come till several months later.

  • Either way, glad to hear it's nothing to worry about.  I'll tell the pedi about it at the next appt and see what she says, too.
