Cloth Diapering

rash trouble shooting (long)

DS has had a rash for about a week.  We have tried CA baby & CJs unscented BUTTer.  Out of desperation we just got some Desitin to try.  The rash is worst right about his penis, but there are some "speckles" near his waist band/navel and also on his legs.

Our first theory was now that he is in overnight dipes longer, so we bought some fleece to try.  It is better but still pretty bad, luckily not quite as red.  Could it just take awhile to heal?

We use RnG unscented: cold rinse, hot soak/wash, extra rinse.  We wash our dipes every 2 days and use 2 Tbsp for our moderately hard water.  I used to use less, but I recently increased bc a few dipes had a little smell, still.  We often do a long soak on them, since I have a cheap @$$ washer anyway and do it all manually.

We also have some Dropps and soapnuts I can try, but we have a ton of RnG, so I hope that's not it!  It seems like I've never heard of the unscented causing irritations but lately I have read more about RnG (not sure of scent) causing redness.

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

  • Are you using RnG Hard Rock or Classic Rock? There was a recall a few months back of RnG Hard Rock because it was causing irritation to kiddos.

What kind of diapers are you using? Have you tried stripping the diapers at all?

  • I would try fleece for night and day. And yes, it can take a little while to clear up... but that's what did it for us.

And if you do think it's the soap, you can always do 2 extra rinses. I did that for a while, and it made no difference... but that way I KNEW there was not even one little bit of soap left.

  • I think that a rash due to detergent irritation would be more wide spread.  Does the bit on the waistband/legs look like it could just be from rubbing? (This is what happened on DD's chunky thighs where the diaper was rubbing, it decreased over time.)  Some things you can try: baths with either baby oil or oatmeal, lots of air, and the stay dry liners.  From personal experience, I'd also say that you should see a pediatrician if you can't get the rash to clear up in about a week  or if it continues to get worse as secondary infection can set in.
  • We use classic rock & a large variety of diaper types.  Overnight we *mostly use MSO or GM good.nights with wool.  During the day he is in PUL, though, until I get more wool, which is on its way and get it washed.  I guess we could go coverless w/ baby legs + socks in the afternoon?

  • Sounds like what my son had a few months ago.  Took him to the doctor about a rash all over his body, which turned out to be Coxsackie (aka:  hand, foot, and mouth), but the rash was the worst in his diaper area.  He was diagnosed with a yeast infection in the diaper area on TOP of the Coxsackie.  Poor baby!

Try googling diaper yeast infection, and see if the pictures match your baby's body.
