I had read that it was ok to eat tuna once a week. My doctor said since the mercury levels have been found to be higher than previously thought that I shouldn't eat any. I have totally been craving it too but I am resisting.
I was eating it about once a week or every 2 weeks and then my husband scared me with this article below. So I'm going to try to cut way back. I love tuna sandiches and tuna sushi rolls!!
every doc is different. I was told to stay away completely, but that cold cuts are ok if I microwave for 15 seconds or make them in a panini. I don't want to make myself too crazy so I say everything (within reason of course) in moderation.
I have also been craving tuna melts like crazy! My doctor gave me a list of types of fish to avoid completely, eat once a month, or "go for it." Tuna was on the once a month list. Here are the other things on the list:
Don't Eat: Oysters, halibut, king mackerel, pike, sea bass, shark, swordfish, tuna steaks, walleye, white croaker.
Limit to Once a Month: blue mussel, canned tuna, cod, eastern oyster, great lakes salmon, gulf of mexico blue crab, lake whitefish, mahi-mahi, pollock, wild channel catfish.
Go for it: croaker, farm-raised catfish or trout, fish sticks, flounder, haddock, mid-atlantic blue crab, shrimp, wild pacific salmon.

According to my doctor, one of the smaller size cans a week is fine.
I use it to make spicy tuna rolls...its a lot of work, but I swear its almost as good as the real thing!
