WWYD 100.6 fever/cough right now... daycare tomorrow?

DS has a cough & is running a 100.6 fever right now. The cough is deep when he first wakes up. He is eating normally and playing normally...

What would you do about daycare tomorrow? I'm a teacher and my class is going on a field trip tomorrow until 11am. So i can't take off in the morning. (if ds was really sick, I would take off though. )

  • Do you have to call in tonight? Is there anyway DH can stay home in the morning and you relieve him after 11? This is what my DH and I did yesterday. I had meetings from 8-12 so he covered the morning. Then I got home and he went to work from 12:30 til 6. LO had the exact same thing. My daycare wont take them if they have a fever above 100. Also do you give any Tylenol? If so I would give that and see how he is if you can wait on calling in. GL!

  • It's really hard to find a sub on a Friday and the other teacher I work with will have a sub tomorrow as well, so we'd be sending 55 kids on a field trip with 2 adults that don't know them and have no clue what is going on. Which is NOT a good thing to do...

I gave DS some ibuprophen about an hour ago.

  • I would stay home, but thats as easy as sending an email to the rest of my team members.  Could you send him until the field trip is over and then go home?

    Yes, I could do this!

Would you all take them to walk-in in the morning or just stay home?

  • I'm not sure it warrants a visit to the doc and/or walk-in.  Sounds like the beginning of a cold and they'll more than likely to tell you to keep doing what you're doing. :)

  • If there is anyway to stay home with him I would, he probably feels crapy and if he is in day one of a cold he is probaby really contageous.

  • My mom's a teacher so I know how hard it is to get off.  That said, what's your daycare's policy about fevers and sending him?  What do they consider a fever?  I know our preschool says you can't send them unless they've been fever-free for at least 24 hours.  They classify a fever as anything over 100.  Our pedi considers a fever anything over 101.5, or at least that's all he wants to hear about.  Could he just be teething?  My kids have gotten congested and had a cough/runny nose when they're teething.  Still probably just a cold.  If you can help it, keep him home.  Otherwise, send him if the policy doesn't say you can't.  The question I usually ask myself is would I be upset if another mom sent their kids to school when they were "sick" like this?  With colds and such, I always send them.  With worse, I don't.  What would you want another mom to do if the situation was reversed?
