Hi Ladies! I am going to be CD'ing our second child. I have read the FAQ's and still have one more question.
It seems in the newborn phase alot of people said they used prefolds, does that mean AIO's do not come in the newborn phase or they don't work well for newborns?
If prefolds are my only option for the newborn phase, that would mean I would need to get a good amount of covers to go on them, since they are not waterproof correct?
Thanks in advance for your help!!
Re: FAQ-Question
They're just easier at that age because you go through a LOT of them, and they wash and dry quickly/easily.
You'll need approx 4-5 covers, yes. As luck would have it, I'm selling a bunch of our NB covers HERE. (shameless self promotion)
You can find AIOs for the newborn phase, but I think most people go with prefolds because of the cost. Figure they are only in newborn diapers until they are about 8-12 lbs until the sized ones or OS ones fit, so usually only a month or two, plus, in those early weeks, they tend to soil more diapers, so you need a fairly large NB stash. We used sposies for the first month , but if we have another I'll go with some of the ones we already have that will fit a NB or get a set of NB prefolds.
And yes, you need covers for prefolds. I'd say at least 4 - 6, but it depends on how often you want to do laundry.
Some diapers like AIOs and pockets do come in newborn sizes. A lot of people want to save $ during the newborn phase (which can last from weeks to months), and they know they're dealing with a baby being changed every 2 hours (if not more often), so prefolds (and fitteds) are used more with newborns. One-sized diapers don't fit until around 10-12 lb.
You can re-use covers as long as they're not soiled or stinky. I would take one off, hang it up to air out, and put another one on. I could conceivably rotate through just those 2, but I had about 6 total.
Youtube has great tutorials
I did all AIOs and a KL0 (fitteds) rental. I didn't do PFs. PFs would have been cheaper but DH can barely work snaps, let alone folding and snappis. I justified all the AIOs by the fact that we will be having at least one more.
DD was 7 lbs 1.5 oz at birth and her NB stash fit til 2 months. That's not a very long time, hence why many people use PFs for cost. A lot of people just plain like them for newborns, cost aside.
Prefolds are great, not only for the cost factor, but also because you can use them once you are done using them as diapers -- they make GREAT burp cloths, or rags, or doublers.
As for folding, some people don't fold them at all -- I mean, they just fold them in thirds and lay them in the cover. I'm too neurotic for that, and though I spent a long time looking at all teh different folding techniques (angel wing, etc.) I found the twist to be pretty idiot-proof (my husband picked it up on the first try) and work best for our daughter.
I am not using prefolds for my twins on the way.
My NB stash consists of fitteds and aio's.
