Girls who color your hair, please come in

My natural hair color is a mousey dirty blond color (ugly!!), so I really do have to color it.  I got my roots done right before my BFP, and needless to say I'm looking a little skanky these days...my roots are definitely becoming an issue.

Are you full-on coloring your hair, or just getting highlights during pregnancy?  Or just letting it go???  I definitely need a refresh, but don't know whether or not to commit to keeping highlights up.

I understand this is an annoying question to some, but I really am curious what others are doing :)  Please don't shoot me!!

  • My doctor said any hair dye is fine after 1st tri.

  • You will be fine if you color your hair. Most of the stuff they use now is safer than what was used years ago, and also, ventilation in most salons are a lot better. So you really won't be smelling much of the color.

  • I colored my hair in my last pg, the amount of chemical is so little. My mw has no problem with it. Plus I think its better for our moral its bad enough we feel ackward and huge at least our hair needs to look nice!

  • I plan to color my hair.  Right now my roots aren't too bad, and the texture of my hair is going crazy so I'm going to wait until I absolutely have to!  Getting my hair done is one of my favorite things in the world, so as long as the doctor tells me I can do it, I'm all in!
  • I just highlight mine and I highlighted throughout the last pregnancy, although I started going to Aveda because I was a little nervous about chemicals and thought their stuff might be safer.
  • Full on coloring.  I got mine done at 4 weeks and at 11 weeks.  From everything I've read, it's fine to do.

  • I got my hair colored at 10 or 11 weeks - it is fine, either way.  The smell is going to be your main concern if you have issues with scents.
  • I do highlights and lowlights.  I am getting it touched up Saturday and I can't wait!!

  • Hey there! I definitely plan on highlighting my hair just before Christmas (I'll be almost 17 weeks at that point! Unbelievable!) But yeah from what I hear it's safe. Just make sure your salon has good ventilation!

  • I don't color my hair but I may have to if I find another freaking gray!  My doctor told me it's fine to color.

I'm bummed I'm getting grays lately... I love my hair color.  It's as dark brown as you can get practically and has lots of red and lighter brown natural highlights.  To recreate that will cost a fortune!  But, because it's so dark it's easy to spot the grays when they come in.  Isn't 28 too young for that?!?!

  • Full on color, plus highlights too. I went blonde, so first they had to lighten my base. Then, I had highlights done. It's totally fine

  • Thanks, ladies!  I know it's okay, I just want to minimize the number of times I go throughout my pregnancy out of shear laziness, and highlights are always more to maintain...but I love the way they look.  I just need anything at this point lol!!

I started getting grays when I was 20. I'm 26 now and it's pretty noticeable if I have dark hair (used to be a blond). I tried no-ammonia dye at week 8, but they didn't stick. As soon as I hit week 12 I used the regular stuff.

  • Coloring your hair is fine. I did it with DD and she's perfectly fine. I did stop doing it a couple months before she was born though. I decided to just let my natural color grow out since I'd been coloring it since I was twelve! I now haven't colored it since April 2009 and I'm so happy with it! I miss being light blonde, but it's so much healthier. Smile

  • I usually am pretty blonde but I had my hairdresser put tons and tons of dark brown lowlights in mine. (She didn't recommend all over color because of the contact on my scalp.)

  • I'm getting mine done this weekend (thank God!) My hairdresser uses an ammonia free product so that makes me feel a lot better about coloring.

  • I will be getting full color tomorrow... I love love love it dark! My natural color has a lot of copper/red which I dont mind during the summer... And yes, I am 22 and I have grays. If I dont cover them- I end up pulling every. last. damn. one. out. :)

  • I'm going to get my hair colored for the first time today during my pregnancy!  My doc said coloring is fine but now I'm just trying to decide if I want all over color again or just keep the blonde highlights

  • I hate my natural hair color as well.... I had highlights right before BFP, however, I think the last night I had my hair done, I actually was pregnant and just didn't know it yet. I do plan on waiting until after 1st trimester to get my hair highlighted again... which is very soon. :o) I think this is also the recommendation by doctors.
