Babies: 9 - 12 Months

My older brother is a jerk!

One of my nephews calls me "Tia". He couldn't say Aunt, Auntie, Aunt Heather or even Heather. Tia he could manage without fail and it was a perfectly respectable name IMO. If he associates that with me then I'm ok with it. My kid brother and his wife were fine with it as well. We knew Jackson had a minor speech delay and whatever he called me was fine.

My older brother heard Jackson call me Tia and went off on me. "Why the fvck is he calling you TIA? You're not Mexican! You're White!" I tried explaining that his son, the first grandchild couldn't say Granddad and the name he could say was Dan-Dan. Everyone was fine with that. I found a word that meant Aunt that Jackson could say and I was fine with it. What's the problem?

Ever since then he screams at me that I'm not hispanic in ANY way (because clearly I wasn't aware all my life just how caucasian I am) and how TIA is NOT ok with him and WTF was I thinking. I asked him if "Thea" would be more acceptable since that's the Greek word for Aunt.

What a jackhole! My nephew is 4 and is now self conscious over his name for me and getting yelled at by his Uncle. Ugh some people.

Re: My older brother is a jerk!

  • Wow, what a jerk!  Tell him he's an idiot, and it's short for Auntie.  My niece couldn't say my name for years, and called me "Kiki" instead of Stacey, and no one cared!  Granted, she also called that cat that....

  • Your brother is a jerk!  Poor little guy, I can't believe your brother yelled at him!
  • He must be fun at parties. Yikes!
  • Ugh.  Sounds like my brother, although he wouldn't quite flip out so much, he'd just make some snide racist comment under his breath.  I don't know where he came from, because the rest of his siblings and extended family are totally open and... normal, for lack of a better word.

Hahaha! When I first read this, I totally thought you meant you couldnt punch him in the junk because there was something wrong with him...and he didnt HAVE junk! BWAHAHA!

  • What a jerk. Something similar happened to me when I was around 4 or 5 and I will always remember.

My uncle is white, but I had always called him Tio. He asked me once why I call him that if he's white. I just told him, "Because you're my Tio." He left it alone, and I still call him Tio. For me, that is his name and will always be his name.

It's like my mom's name is Judy (used to be Leonor) and everyone calls her Noicey b/c that what one my aunts called her when they were little. Kids should be able to give someone a name they can say with out feeling self-conscious about it is all I'm sayin'.

  • One of my nieces calls me Tia Erin.

    Yup, I'm white!

He always says it. It's just gotten to where it makes Jackson feel bad and Rick tries to make me feel bad for being called Tia.

This chaps my hide. Your poor nephew. I would have your younger bro sit down and explain to him that sometimes people try to make us feel bad but all that matters is what makes US feel good, as long as it isn't hurting anybody. I recently had to have this same conversation with my (almost) 4 year old because he calls my husband "Roy-Daddy". He knows who his father is and calls him Daddy, but his father was NOT ok with it and made Nathan feel really bad. I sat Nathan down and told him what I said above. I told him that he could even call DH "French Fry Head" if that made him happy but, in the end, he can call us all whatever he wants as long as it's not a bad word and as long as it makes his heart happy. That has helped and he's stood up to his dad once or twice about it, but it's hard.
This is a test. This is only a test.
  • This is just stupid.  What difference does it make?

    Is he racist?
