Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

D&C or not?

I have health insurance but it doesn't cover pregnancy so I'm assuming it's not going to cover a D&C either.  My MW said that it would happen naturally especially since I was only measuring at 6w with no actual baby in the sac.  Anyone have experience NOT having  D&C?  I've never been through this....ugh

Re: D&C or not?

  • It's a tough decision for sure. The thought of a D&C scared me so I voted on waiting for the miscarriage to happen naturally. I was further along than you though. I found out at 9 wks that there was no more heartbeat. I waited 3 weeks for the bleeding to start and then I bled for 4 weeks. I finally got scheduled for a D&C. By that point I just wanted to whole ordeal to be over with. That's my experience and I know it's different for everyone. I just wanted to let you know that waiting for it to happen naturally doesn't guarantee that you won't need a D&C in the end. Good luck with your decision and I hope that which ever way you choose goes without any complications.

  • Well I should be 9w6d today (LMP 10-1-10), and basically want to avoid what you described.  My bleeding has already picked up today, from very light brownish streaky spotting yesterday to actual bright red today, but still not heavy.  I'll give it a couple weeks I suppose.

  • Not sure how far along you are.  I had a missed m/c at 5 weeks, discovered at 7.  Didn't start to spot for about 5 more weeks (the day before my scheduled d&c ironically).  There's really no telling how long it will take, if your levels are still high it will take awhile for them to come down.  It can be hard to wait that long and many people want closure and to move on as soon as possible.  There's really no wrong decision and it can't hurt to wait a couple weeks to see what happens and how you feel.  Also, call your insurance company to see what is covered.  Even if it's not covered, you might still get a discount.  My $4000 d&c "only" cost me $1400 after it went through my insurance for a discount.

  • Thanks for the info.  I think I'll give it a couple of weeks, my spotting is picking up and getting brighter, so maybe (hopefully) it won't take too long.

  • Your doctor may also give you the options of medication to "speed up" the process.  My second loss was a "missed" m/c and I couldn't handle the thought of surgery or just waiting for something to happen.  So I went that route. If things seem to be moving along for you, waiting may be a good option as some of the side effects from the meds are pretty rotten.  Sorry you are going through this.  (((hugs)))

  • My m/c happened on its own and I never needed a D&C.  Mine wasn't a 'missed miscarriage' though, it happened right away.

Not sure if you're looking for info on what to expect with the bleeding and all, but I'll give you my experience (TMI warning).  One day of spotting with gradual change from brown to pink, 3 days heavy bleeding (bright red, clots, tissue, embreyo, cramping), from there it lighted up a lot each day.  It was done in a week.  Doc had said up to 2 weeks bleeding is normal though.

I'd recommend you speak to your doctor regarding if they want to check you afterwards to be sure all of the 'products of conception' find their way out of your body.  Mine checked me for that via u/s.

There are pluses and minuses no matter which way you go (D&C vs natural).  Regardless, its a sucky experience and I'm really sorry to hear you are going through it.

    Take care.

    ~All AL'ers welcome~

  • Hi!  I am very sorry that this is happening.  It is certainly your choice what you would like to do, but here is my story:

I found out on 11/16 (3 weeks ago) that my baby no longer had a heartbeat.  I was 9w1d but the baby was only measuring at 6w3d.  I was given 3 options: wait it out, take Cytotec, or have a D & C.  I like you was worried about the money aspect, so I opted to wait it out.  After a week of waiting and no blood or cramping, I decided to give the medicine a try.  It supposedly works 90% of the time, but it did not work for me.  It did however make me very ill.  A couple of days later, there was still nothing happening, so I decided (like a dummy) to try the medicine again.  this time vaginally.  Still nothing.

On Monday of last week, I began to bleed fairly heavily and thought that it would start soon.  On Tuesday afternoon, I was passing very large clots and had cramps so painful that I thought I was going to have to go to the ER.  Well, it finally subsided and I had hoped that the worst of it was over.  I went into my docs office on Wed to get a u/s done and unfortunately, NOTHING had passed.  Everything was still in tact.  I went in today for my D & E.  My doc was worried that if I passed that much blood and was in that much pain when nothing was happening, I would surely be in the ER when I actually did pass it (which according to him, was not going to be soon).

So...after 3 weeks of an absolute emotional rollercoaster, it is hopefully over.  I have alread said that heaven forbid this happen again, but if it does, I will have the surgery right away.  This has completely turned our life and marriage upside down.

We are so ready to get back to our normal lives!

Sorry so long, Good luck on what you decide!
