And will they change when LO gets here?
I was raised Jewish and MH was raised Christian, so we at least don't have to struggle splitting time with our families! We always have a latke dinner at my mom's and then usually spend time with his family on Christmas day. We've always had a decorated tree at our house, because I really like that tradition, and in the past we've opened gifts from each other on Christmas eve. We were talking, though, and decided when LO is here, we want to do family gifts on NYE. He/she will get Hanukkah presents with one set of grandparents and Christmas presents with the other, but we thought it would be nice to celebrate a non-denominational holiday at home. MH considers himself an atheist and I consider myself culturally (but not religiously) Jewish, so I think the new tradition will fit us well.
What about you guys?
Re: What are your holiday traditions?
We usually just split the day between our families (both live in town).
We'll definitely do that again this year, but may have to start changing things once we have a kid in the picture that we'd be dragging all over the place. It can be a lot in one day!
My favorite holiday tradition is that every year my mom, grandma, aunts and I all get together one Friday in the beginning or middle of December to bake cookies. We typically do sugar cookies together and each bring a dough made up of a cookie of our choice and then bake those while the sugar cookies are cooling to decorate.
This year we're doing it tomorrow and we've had so much going on lately that we're scaling it down a bit but still doing it. My grandma was in the hospital until yesterday, my grandpa is sick and I have a doctors appt (make up from a cancelled appt yesterday) so we're just doing the "extra" cookies and skipping the sugar cookies. No one ever really eats the sugar cookies anyway. I think my mom and I are going to make funfetti cookies instead! So easy and delicious!
It won't change when LO is born, except I'll include him or her in it until school starts probably. Unless the kid has zero desire, but I love to bake so I've always said that when I have kids I will involve them in the kitchen once they're old enough if it's something they like. Regardless, my kids WILL know how to cook before they graduate high school. I hate that DH doesn't know how to cook. He could with a recipe but he won't!
DH is Jewish and I am Christian. We celebrate Hanukkah with his family and Christmas with mine. This year, we are traveling to Nor Cal to visit with my aging grandparents as this may be their last Christmas.
When my dad isn't in town for Christmas, we celebrate with my BFF's family. They are like a second family and our kids will be "cousins." She and I have been friends since we were two and we grew up a lot like sisters.
