Moms of children with reflux ?

If you child was diagnosed with reflux did your child not want to eat? How was his/her weight gain (difficulty gaining weight or no problem with weight gain)? Did your child scream when you put him/her down to sleep at night after a feeding? Please tell me what worked for you! TIA

Re: Moms of children with reflux ?

  • DS#1 had reflux.  There were times when he constantly wanted to eat because it "soothed" his throat and then there were times when he didn't want to eat at all.  He would scream everytime he laid flat.  He was put on zyrtec (?) and it worked wonders!

We would also burp him constantly while he was eating, to keep the bubbles out of his system and we never laid him down right after he ate, we always kept him semi-upright for at least a half hour to an hour after he finished his bottle.   His reflux also got better once he started solids.

As far as his weight gain, it wasn't slow, but not fast either, like on the upper end of slow to middle.

  • Both of mine have/had reflux.  Mine tended to be on the overeating side to soothe so no weight gain issues.  But, we caught it fairly early with Scarlett and I could have seen her going down that road once it fully presented itself.  Jackson was a big eater from the beginning though, and we caught it later - he tended to overeat.

Screaming while flat, arching back while eating, acting super hungry but pulling off the bottle/boob and screaming, very burpy.  In general acting very uncomfortable, especially after eating.  Projectile vomiting is another sign.  Another thing to look for is milk/soy sensitivity.  A lot of kids w/ reflux have that issue too.

What worked for us w/ Jackson:

    - hypoallergenic formula

    - Prilosec

    - keeping him elevated after feedings for 15-30m

    - frequent burping

What worked for us w/ Scarlett

    - hypoallergenic formula

    - Prilosec

    - elevating her crib

    - frequent burping

    - thickening her bottles w/ simply thick

Scarlett's reflux is worse than Jackson's was, or she is more bothered by it.  Not sure which, but we needed to do more w/ her to keep her comfy and sleeping.
