Baby Names

Brainstorming girls' names

So far we've come up with:

Nora (but, I feel that this might be getting popular??) - possibly Ellenore after my grandmother, with nn Nora

Gwyn

And, I like Hazel, although DH hates it :)

I also kind of like Ann, which I think is classic, but he says is too plain.

I originally (years ago) had my heart set on a soft, feminine name that ended in an "a" - but most have become way too popular for my taste (Emma, Ella, etc.)

Our DS is Davis.   I guess you could say that we like different, but not weird :)    (Although not evidenced by my addition of "Ann" to the list!)

Thoughts?  Suggestions?

Re: Brainstorming girls' names

  • we also like Hazel, Ann and Eleanor.

Also on our list in Susannah(nn Susie), Maeve(nn Mae), and Pearl.

I am so lost, I thought I was set on a name, but now that e KNOW it's a girl, I am back at the starting line!

  • When I was younger and would think about the perfect baby name, I picked things that I never even thought about when I actually became pregnant.  Since starting my family, I tend to go with things that have meaning, and honor someone in the family or keep a name going so to speak.  I'm all for you using Ellenore and calling your little girl Nora.  I think it's a great way to honor someone in your family and yet still get the name you really love.  There will always be names that you like, but if you pick a name that has meaning in some way, you will never fall out of love with it.

    GL!

  • I really like Nora (especially after your grandmother) and Gwyn. IMO Ann is too plain jane.

I'm partial to Georgia (see sig pic) but that fits the bill. Otherwise, I love naming DD after your grandmother and the nn Nora.

  • I love Eleanor (this spelling) and Nora is cute. Gwen (this spelling) is cute.

I'm not a fan of Hazel. Anne would be a cute MN.

    Other suggestions:

Lila, Audrey, Alice, Caroline, Eliza, and Genevieve.

  • well you seem to have fairly similar tastes as me, so here's names that I love:

    Elisabeth

    Maeve

    Audrey/Audra

    Violet

    Matilda

    Lilliana

    Pearl

    Dinah

    Rose

    Evelyn

    Miranda

    Opal

  • Well I love Hazel (it's DD2's name) and Ann, though I prefer it spelled Anne. Maybe if your husband thinks it's too plain, you could make it longer (for instance, Anneliese...which happens to be my DD1's name...hehe) and call her Ann for short. Nora is also really pretty, but you're right about it getting popular.

    Anneliese Olive 11/5/09
    Hazel Dianna 1/8/11
    Luna Valentine 4/25/13

  • I actually love Ann for a first name. I don't know anyone named Ann/Anne. It seems to be much more common as a middle name. Nora is getting very popular. I don't like Gwyn or Hazel. What about Anna?
  • I like Norah, Eleanor, and Gwyneth (those spellings). I also like Ann, but I agree that it is kind of plain. Where we live, Ann or Anna is usually coupled with another name as a double name like Lara Ann, Anna Lane, Anna Kate, Anna Liz, or Anna Reese.

Some suggestions for you are Evelyn with nn Eva/Evie, Lara, Everly, Cora, and Leah.

  • If you like Ann you could always do Annelise or Annika.

I love Norah- but it wouldn't work now.

    What about: Rory, Gemma, Amelia?

  • Great suggestions and thoughts everyone!  Keep 'em coming :)

To answer a few questions, I'm not a huge fan of Anna (it's pretty, but we know several friends' daughters with that name), and I definitely prefer the spelling of Gwen to that of my op - good call!

As for Ellenore. . .you're right, Eleanor is a better spelling - it will just be to decide whether or not we want to exactly "copy" gram's name (which is spelled as in my op) if we go with that name.

    Thanks!

  • I like the name Ellenore (but i like it better spelled Elinor personally) best and Gwyn second best. Hazel is Indifferent and Ann is too plain for my tastes. I like Annabelle or Anneliese with the nn of Ann or Anna.

    Some other names:

    Lena

    Althea or Aletha

    Francesca

    Audra

    Calissa

    Sylvia

    Sayla

    Ellora

    Amara
