My DS is almost 5 months and has his first tooth, dentist said no need to 'brush' gums or tooth yet. She rec'd soft wash cloth rubbed gnetly on gums after each feeding. I even asked about that 'gum cleaner' and she said no need for it. HTH
My understanding is that you should start brushing or wiping gums off as soon as first tooth . I even read that they say you should floss baby teeth as soon as the have two side by side .

It's never too early to get your LO used to cleaning his/her teeth. I use Spiffies tooth wipes on DD's gums (they're like moist towelettes but they have Xylitol, which helps prevent tooth decay). You don't have to use a toothbrush, but you should definitely wipe their teeth after every feeding. Milk has sugar (lactose) and I've seen lots of kids who have had to have their baby teeth pulled because they were never brushed when they were little. I actually went to an elementary school yesterday and I saw these two brothers, 4 and 6 years old, who were both missing their front teeth (having been pulled because they were rotted) and all their back teeth were crowned with stainless steel crowns. It was so sad.

I brush DSs gums every day when I brush my teeth. Mostly because he thinks its the coolest thing ever and it keeps him entertained a little longer while I'm getting ready.
