Moving....midwives in KY?

Hi all!

I've been MIA as DH and I have been house hunting in KY.  I am seeing a great m/w now and am not finding any in my plan near our new home in KY.  A friend said it's because CNMidwives don't practice in KY......I can't find any info on google.  Is this right?  I'm going to talk to my m/w about it on Thursday but I thought I would throw it out here too.

TIA!

  • I don't personally know anything about Kentucky, but the all-knowing Google reports that there are CNMs there. Here's a link that might be helpful: https://kentuckymidwives.net/

And a blog post that talks about the laws. Sounds like the laws are a little unfriendly to midwives since they don't license direct-entry midwives, but that's the same way it is in my state too (SC).

Hopefully your midwife can tell you more, maybe she knows some people there.

  • I live in Lexington, and I was seeing a midwife at a large OB practice here in town. They have three CNMs on staff (mine is leaving, so I'm switching to a doctor). So, there are CNMs in the state, though I don't know the law specifically.

  • I'm from KY and yes they do have midwives.  I used to see one at my OB practice for annual exams if the OB was not available.  I'm from the Lexington area but hubby is from the Louisville area.  I would search through your providers on your insurance.  Another good resource I always give out is to go to www.city-data.com  Click on forum at top of page and then Kentucky..Louisville.  I've found SO much help and referrals on this website.  It is truly awesome!!

Yay! Louisville is a good city. Don't worry about the weather too much- if you don't like it, wait 5 minutes, it'll change. Stick out tongue

As far as midwives goes, yes we do have them, but there aren't that many. The website that the PP reccomended is a good one. I never did find one I was happy with though. I decided to go with an OB and I highly, highly reccomend mine. If you decide to go the OB route check out Advocates for Women's Health. They are a great group of doctors. I'm not sure of your reasonings for wanting a midwife, but my concern was I wanted a natural childbrith, and felt that a midwife would be the best route. It turns out the my OB is a big supporter of natural childbrith, and she highly reccomends Norton's Hospital because they are focusing more and more on this route. They are huge proponents of The Golden Hour, and have things like wireless monitoring so you can labor how you chose. Just some things to think about in case you can't find a midwife you love. Good luck! Let me know if you have any questions about the city! Smile

Good! I lived in Florida for the previous 10 years and the South my whole life, so this "northern" weather is killing me. Good luck with the move!

Thanks for the info.  Who is your OB?  I don't want natural childbirth but I do want more handholding than the avg OB will give me.

She's done a lot of hand holding with me. I think she understands the fears and worries that all mom-to-be's and new moms have. I see Dr. Nett, but I've also seen Dr. Evans, who seems great too. My sister, who goes to the same practice, sees Dr. Walsh and she likes her as well. There's only one other doctor that I know nothing about - Dr. Graves - but she has excellent online reviews. Their office is located on the East End of Louisville, but Dr. Nett does circulate in the South End as well. I'm not sure which end of town you are looking at. Even if it's not the East End though, honestly they would be worth the extra time in the car IMHO. I HTH!

Great!  I'll look them up in my network now.  We're looking on the east side. :)
