High-Risk Pregnancy

Metformin & Pregnancy

Just wondering if anyone out there with a history of PCOS and on metformin before getting pregnant, has continued to stay on this drug throughout the pregnancy? I have read great things about staying on this through drug till delivery. Any advice?

Re: Metformin & Pregnancy

  • I have PCOS and have been on Metformin on and off for about 9 years. When I met with my doctor in August about getting pregnant he switched me to Metformin ER. The regular Metformin tore up my stomach and was really hard for me to take multiple times a day.

So since August I have been taking Metformin ER 750mg twice a day with no issues. I am now almost 17 weeks pg and they have made no mention of taking me off this medication.

  • Hi;

I was on Metformin 500mg ER during my first pregnancy and now with this pregnancy I am on Metformin 500 mg 2x a day.
I have a history of PCOS as well and the Metformin helped me ovulate. During the pregnancy it helps control my insulin levels.

I have not had any issues while pregnant and on Metformin.

    Hope this helps.

  • I take 1000mg twice a day. It helps me to ovulate on my own. This is my second set of twins while on it. I am staying on it throuhout this pregnancy.
  • I have PCOS. I was on Met while we were doing fertility treatments and then for the entire first tri. My RE took me off the drug b/c I had no family history of diabetes, so I had no additional risk factors to persuade him to keep me on it. Haha, now I have GD and am on Insulin!

  • I was on metformin for insulin resistance. Imagine my surprise when i got pregnant after hearing for the last 20 years i wouldn't get pregnant without help.

Seems my doctor forgot to mention Metformin's 'OTHER' use.

one of my symptoms of pregnancy was that while on the metformin i was having hypoglycemic episodes daily.

They took me off of it at that point.

I read that it can help prevent miscarriage in the first trimester, but beyond that, not so much.

I found this site to be particularly informative:

  • I, too, have PCOS & take Metformin ER (1000mg 2x a day) for insulin resistance issues.  At my 1st prenatal visit the Dr went over my medications (I'm hypertensive, too) with me & suggested I stop taking the Metformin ER (since we know my ovaries work!).

However, I mentioned to her a book by a PCOS specialist I've read suggesting PCOS women continue taking Metformin throughout the 1st trimester to reduce the chance of miscarriage.

Being a Category B drug, she suggested I start 'weaning' myself off during the coming week.  Her concern was the baby's organ development & why take unnecessary medications which might compromise (eventhough Metformin doesn't) growth & development.

  • I have PCOS and diabetes. I was on Metformin ER 2000mg before I got pregnant but came off as soon as I got pregnant. I saw a high-risk OB for a preconception counseling session about a year before I got pregnant and he told me that he preferred me to be on insulin the entire pregnancy rather than any kind of drug (even though Metformin is considered safe). He just wanted me to be as natural as possible.

I was worried about this at first because I had also read that Metformin helped prevent against miscarriage in the 1st tri.

But it all worked out :)

  • PS - I was also told that I cannot go back on Metformin until after I finish breastfeeding. I'm not sure of the reason for that but just thought it was worth mentioning...

  • I was on 1500mg before I got pregnant (I have pcos).  I dropped down to 500mg when I found out I was pregnant and the all day sickness kicked in.  I couldn't handle the "met gut" and being sick from being pregnant!  I'll continue on it until I deliver.  I'll stop taking it while breastfeeding and then start back on it when I wean.
