High-Risk Pregnancy

Pre-e/section hospital policy

So the doc told me I was pre-e two weeks ago, and nothing has gotten worse. BP has been normal. There was not even trace protiens in dip today. Last wk the doc told me that I would probably have to go in early for section (which is schedualed for the 20th @ 39wks). Then today with a different doc at the same office they said that they couldn't move my section date up unless something changes with my situation ie BP goes up, protiens go up, NSTs go badly, any symptoms pop up, ect. Via hospital policy they can't do a section unless I'm 39 wks or it is a case of emergency. So I was wondering if anyone else has heard something like this when/ if you had/ have pre-e? My other complaint is that my doc didn't know the policy at their own hospital... and has been freaking me out for no reason. UGH! Alot of ppl have told me that they usually take the baby at 37wks, but the hospital policy is that they can not. I am just getting confused and it seems like no one has the same answers for me when I'm at the docs.

  • I didn't know about the 37w thing until I read a post below about that.  I'm guessing the 39w c/s has to do with recent studies and ACOG's recommendations?

  • Why would you want an earlier c section is things with your baby are great for now?

Obviously, if your situation changes that warrants a csection whenever they need to do it and you'll be taken care of.

Most doctors take a baby out early if they absolutly have too, even though full term is 37 weeks, I would want my baby to bake as long as possibly. Baby's that are even 2 or 3 weeks early can have some slight troubles, including nursing and jaundice.

I think it's great they have your pre-e under control and seems like you may even not have it anymore!

Keep your baby cooking, the longer the better!

  • I had mild pre-e and was scheduled for an induction on 37 weeks to the day.  My ob didn't want to wait any longer then 37 weeks.

If you have pre-e I'm really surprised that they want you to wait until 39 weeks.  Pre-e can go from mild to really bad very quickly.  That is why my ob doesn't go past 37 weeks.

  • That is why I had to ask because one doc. says I need him out early and the others seem to say that I don't. It is just so confusing and frustrating to be told something different by every doc in my practice. And it's not that I want him out early I would rather keep him in there I'm just really weirded out by the fact that they keep telling me different things. So I was just wondering if anyone else had to go through this or if it was just me.
  • A medical indication such as Pre-E should qualify as an "emergent" issue to deliver via c-section at less than 39 weeks.  If the hospital L&D committee does not agree to that then they are falling below the standard of care.

  • My ob told me that they don't take the baby out until 39w unless there is a complication. Just because 37w is full term, doesn't mean the baby is ready. I'll be having a c/s at 38w because I had a classical c/s last time and going past that increases my risk of rupture.
