Depends on the store and how close the pay attention. My grocery store has no clue how to use them, and the teenage check out people have to call a manager every time. (It's the CHECK 2 button! That's what they're going to tell you! I do this every week!)
I usually stack two $5 checks for one $15 can of formula. They haven't told me no yet.

Walmart will often let you stack checks so long as the amount of the checks doesn't exceed the amount purchased. So you could use 4 $5 checks for one $20.99 can of formula.
I also heard that Walgreens will do the same.
I think it probably depends on the specific cashier...
Re: Question about formula checks
At Target you can use one check per can/quart of formula. You can also use a coupon for every can/quart on top of the checks.
So if you buy 5 you can use 5 checks and 5 coupons.

And my Walmart told me no.
And at Target they let me use more than the $ of formula. I use a $5 check and a $3 coupon on a $3.84 bottle of formula.
I used checks and couopns and got all of this for 82 cents!
