febrile seizures

My DS had a febrile seizure on Thursday, his temp was 103.8. There were no signs of infections or cold before the seizure and now he has had a fever off and on for 4 days. We have been to the ER and the doctors twice. Everyone has said it is a virus and has to run its course. Has anyone had any experience in with these types of fever induced seizures.... It had to be the most frightening thing that has ever happen to me....

Re: febrile seizures

  • I am so sorry - I bet they are scary. I don't have experience - but I do know they are fairly common. I hope you never have to see another.

  • I know exactly what you mean as far as not being able to get the image out of your head. We had a really scary experience a while back and it still haunts me sometimes.
  • Alex had a seizure two weeks ago so I can relate to how scary it is and how hard it can be to get that image out of your head. :( His wasn't febrile (he was sick but no fever; he'd been vomiting and they think low blood sugar and dehydration may have triggered it), but my nephew had a febrile seizure last year (he was 3 or 4 at the time) and hasn't had one since. Hopefully your LO will never have another! I do know they are fairly common; I know several LOs who've had them once and never again. Still so scary though. I hope you never experience that again!

  • My BFF's son had those; it was horribly scary. It happened a few times, the last time was shortly before he turned two. He is 3 1/2 now. I don't remember too many other details, but I know he was hospitalized for a few days the first time.

  • Yup.

And I'm such an idiot, I had never heard of febrile seizures so I had no clue WTF was happening. When she crashed, she had a minimal fever; I wasn't at all worried. For some reason I don't know, I went in to check on her. She never had that violent kind of seizure that you see on TV; it was almost the opposite. She went completely limp, but her eyes were open, but she was completely unresponsive and her breathing was really weird.  I honestly thought she was dying. I was terrified and called 911. It was awful, and I felt so silly by the time it was all over, because it is so common, and it really isn't a big deal. As one friend told me, "she's already over it, you probably never will be." She's probably right, I'm getting all teary just thinking about it, and thinking about how scared I was.

Her doctor said she she might have them every time she has a fever, or she might never have one again. So far, thankfully, it's been the latter.

    I am sorry.

  • my oldest has had a few.  He's on medication for it.  His were not really due to a fever though.  That's a good sign that it was fever related.  I still get flashbacks to his.
  • DS  had one like a month ago, it was scary! I would make sure you keep giving LO tylenol to reduce his fever so it does not have another seizure.

  • DS has had at least 2.  (We weren't sure if he had one in the middle of the night a few months ago.)

His last one was last Thursday.  I, fortunately, haven't witnessed one yet.  It's been DH and my brother (who was babysitting him when he had his first one).

It's the scariest, most gut wrenching thing we've gone through with him since birth.

Apparently if they've had one before, they're more susceptible to having them again, just so you know.

  • Oh, and you need to be hyper vigilant about fevers from now on.  Alternating advil/tylenol every 3-4 hours to keep it down.  It's when the fever spikes suddenly (for DS anyway) that brings them on.

  • Thanks everyone, it is comforting to know that others have gone through this too. We were back at the doctors today. Fever was at 101. HIs tonsils were inflamed and red with "stuff" all around them. They checked for strep and mono.... both negative.... Then they decided to give him this shot of antibiotics in his leg and we ahve to go in the Am to get another. I just cant wait for normal again....thanks again

  • Fredalina**** it is interesting you metioned the tonsils, because his are red and inflamed with like puss around them. I had know idea that the 2 may be related to fevers..... thanks for the info...
