My DS had a febrile seizure on Thursday, his temp was 103.8. There were no signs of infections or cold before the seizure and now he has had a fever off and on for 4 days. We have been to the ER and the doctors twice. Everyone has said it is a virus and has to run its course. Has anyone had any experience in with these types of fever induced seizures.... It had to be the most frightening thing that has ever happen to me....
Re: febrile seizures
Yup.
And I'm such an idiot, I had never heard of febrile seizures so I had no clue WTF was happening. When she crashed, she had a minimal fever; I wasn't at all worried. For some reason I don't know, I went in to check on her. She never had that violent kind of seizure that you see on TV; it was almost the opposite. She went completely limp, but her eyes were open, but she was completely unresponsive and her breathing was really weird. I honestly thought she was dying. I was terrified and called 911. It was awful, and I felt so silly by the time it was all over, because it is so common, and it really isn't a big deal. As one friend told me, "she's already over it, you probably never will be." She's probably right, I'm getting all teary just thinking about it, and thinking about how scared I was.
Her doctor said she she might have them every time she has a fever, or she might never have one again. So far, thankfully, it's been the latter.
I am sorry.
My silly Lily is almost 4.
DS has had at least 2. (We weren't sure if he had one in the middle of the night a few months ago.)
His last one was last Thursday. I, fortunately, haven't witnessed one yet. It's been DH and my brother (who was babysitting him when he had his first one).
It's the scariest, most gut wrenching thing we've gone through with him since birth.
Apparently if they've had one before, they're more susceptible to having them again, just so you know.
Oh, and you need to be hyper vigilant about fevers from now on. Alternating advil/tylenol every 3-4 hours to keep it down. It's when the fever spikes suddenly (for DS anyway) that brings them on.
