Speed Pumper/Super Boobs

So at work, there is a "community" breastfeeding pumping room.  Basically it's 4 chairs that face away from one another so it's "private" but not really.  Any way, that's not the point.  There is a woman that comes in there around the same time as me in the afternoon.  I've noticed that her total time from arrival to leaving is about 5 minutes.  5 minutes!!  And last time I peeked at her milk quantity in her bottles (we were having a conversation and she was done pumping, I wasn't being creepy) she got like 7 ounces!  I mean, does she have super boobs?  I'm almost embarrassed when I'm in there with her because it takes me at least 10-15 to get that quantity.  I just want to know what her trick is.  Is anyone else this efficient of a pumper?  I do think that she pumps on one of the highest levels, but does this really make THAT much of a difference?

Re: Speed Pumper/Super Boobs

  • I pump on the highest level and can be done in about 5-8 minutes.  It really depends on how long it's been between pumpings/feedings though.  When it's first thing in the morning and I'm particularly engorged - my milk comes out really fast.  If it's during the day, it's a bit slow so it takes about 8 minutes or so for me to be completely done.  I think you/your boobs get more efficient with time though.  In the beginning when LO was around 2 months or so, it took me about 15 minutes.  Now, I think I'm used to the pump so it's much much faster.  :)

Yeah, but do you pump for the whole 5 minutes?  She arrives, sets up, pumps, and cleans up in 5 minutes.  So she's pumping for about 3 minutes maybe 4.  I get most of my milk out in 10 minutes, but then I do breast compressions for another few minutes to get the rest out.  If I didn't do this, it would take me extra time.  I know what I can produce so I keep pumping until I've met my minimum quantity.

  • In my first morning pump, I am usually super engorged and the milk comes fast- I can pump 7 oz per breast in about 5 min!  For my second and third sessions, it will be more like 7 oz total in about 10 min.

  • OMG! No, that's pumping for the entire 5 minutes.  That's amazing that she can set up, pump and be outta there in 5 minutes.  I wish I could be that fast!

  • I could do it if I were engorged and at the height of my BFing (I'm weaning), but I have overactive let-down/oversupply.

It may seem like a great thing to others, but it was really tough for a while with DD.

  • I wish I could pump 7 ounces!

I pump for 15-30 minutes 5 times per day and get 14 ounces the entire day!

But I am not giving up!

  • I have an oversupply and overactive letdown, and I get about the same as the woman in your office especially in the morning.  If I go more than 3 hours, milk comes out so fast and forceful, I can literally spray from one end of the room to to the other.  I try to pump before feeding DS because he chokes on it.  I can pump until nothing else comes out and still have enough left in a single boob to feed DS, even in the morning after STTN.  It's great for the freezer stash, but I get chronic clogged ducts, and I haven't had over 3 hours of sleep in months (because I have to pump to relieve the pain), even though DS sleeps all night.

I always pump on the highest setting (I have a PISA) and it actually seems to not be 'vigorous' enough - I guess DS must be a crazy sucker so that's what I'm used to.

Some people also just perform well for the pump, and others don't.  There's a lady in my BFing group who only gets a few drops out for the pump, but is able to feed her baby just fine and has no supply issues.  If the lady in your office is an EPer, she may be more efficient with the pump also.
