NTR-How much do you spend on your boss?

This is actually my part-time boss, but he is great to me (and my coworkers).  This year, I don't know what to get him and if I get him a gift card, how much should it be?  What are you getting your boss and how much are you spending (if you don't mind sharing).

  • I don't know what kind of relationship you have with your boss, but I've always heard that you aren't really supposed to buy your boss gifts.  I can't remember why, though.  But, regardless, I bought mine gifts anyway. And I  struggled with how much to spend/what to get too.  I would usually end up spending $100.  This year, though, I just flat out told him I wasn't getting him anything (we are good friends so I can be honest with him like that) because he is rich, I'm not, and if he wants something he just goes and buys it himself.  Gift cards just sit in his drawer unused.

I would maybe just get something small like some fancy chocolates as opposed to an actual gift.

  • I think I got my boss a ($10) bottle of wine last year.  I will probably do the same again this year.  I don't think it's appropriate to spend a lot of money, but the gesture is nice.

  • The only thing I'm giving her is I'm holding off on giving my notice until after New Years.
  • I have a different type of job, as a PT personal assistant.  My relationship with my boss has developed over the years to a more famillial one.  I try not to spend over $100, and sometimes can find something she will like for a little less.

In general I would not get a gift card... it's like giving him money.  Nice wine, and/or chocolates, or something gift basketish.  If he's married, it's nice to get something they can share ;)  If you must get a gift card I'd recommend a round of golf (if he plays).  What about tickets to a sports event, though that can get pricey.  Golf can get pricey too!  If he plays, a gift card to be used at a driving range might be nice.

Yeah...I've heard that too....but, I've worked for him for over ten years and he has been able to give me raises (and he doesn't make that decision...he has to convince others why I should get the raise) and allow me to be flexible with my pt hours.

I usually get him books (he's an avid reader) or a sports memorabilia.  I'm just really stuck this year.  He's diabetic so, no candy or wine for him.

  • I get my boss a foodie basket/tower of some sort.  I found one at Costco this year that had 2 mugs - chocolate - truffles - hot chocolate - and gourmet coffee in it. I think it was $24 which is average of what I try to spend. With a boss I think its more about the thought that you did something for them then how much it costs.
  • I work with a small group of doctors (4) and we are all a pretty close knit team so we always get something.  The doctors usually get us a pretty nice gift so we all chip in and get something together.  This year I think we are getting them each a personalized wine cooler that holds 1 bottle of wine (with their last initial) and a bottle of wine.  I will probably contribute about $30.
