Inhalers while pregnant?

Does anyone else need to use albuterol inhalers when their sick? It never fails every winter I get a nasty bug (usually viral) with a cough and wheeze that won't quit. Well I'm sick and went to my PCP today and she prescribed me the inhaler and told me it was safe to use up to 4 times a day. I'm taking Robitussin and Tylenol but I really need to take the inhaler or I feel like I can't breath.  I tried to call my OB's office to see her thoughts on it, but it was too late by the time I got out of my appointment. So, anyone else use on while pregnant or talked to their OB about using one? Any info you have would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Inhalers while pregnant?

  • They're fine. The idea is that if you aren't getting enough oxygen, neither is the baby. The benefits outweigh the risk in this scenario.

I used Albuterol throughout my first pregnancy with absolutely no issues, and I'm doing the same with this one.

  • I was told to use mine as needed. The benifits far outweigh the risks. Risks are low and if you're not getting enough oxygen, neither is your baby. They are safe, and its actually unsafe for you to not use it when you need it.

  • Like the other ladies have said, my doctor advised that it's very important I'm breathing well so the baby is getting enough oxygen.  Since I have exercise and cold-induced asthma, I will be using my Albuterol as needed

  • Yep...what PP said!  I'm also on a controller inhaler (Advair) which is a Category C drug but the risks of not taking it are much worse for both me an the baby.

    Hope you feel better soon!

Advair is the bomb! I love it. Also, can I say how irritated I was when my OB nurse told me that I should not use ANY drugs for the first 12 weeks.. including my inhalers. I responded 'If you would like me in the hospital within three days then I will be happy to stop using my advair'. My doctor didn't even bat an eye at that OR my antihistamines.

  • I just got over a nasty virus that caused me to have bronchitis.  I was prescribed an abuterol inhaler to take as needed (she said to take it 4 times a day to keep things cleared up for the first day or so).  She also told me that either the breathing treatment I got there or the inhaler (don't know if they're the same) have the same compound as a medicine they use to stop preterm labor...I know I jumbled it up as I'm clearly not a doc lol.  But rest assured it's safe.

  • Funny, I just asked my OB the same question today.  I have asthma that is acting up with the wintery air.  She said it is perfectly fine to use.  One of the safest things.

  • My doc gave me a list of approved drugs. There are not a lot on the list, but albuterol is on there :) I have to do breathing treatments when I get sick and I was sick enough to use it about two weeks ago. Albuterol is typically used in breathing treatments and is a less concentrated form of the inhaler. One dose ends up being the same amount.
  • I was switched from Advair (which I LOVED!) to Qvar once I got pregnant.  My pulminologist felt better about it only having one drug instead of two.  I'm doing ok on it, but sure miss my Advair.

I, too, take albuterol as needed.  None of my doctors (RE excluded, he wanted me off of everything, which really isn't a great idea) have batted an eye about albuterol for the reasons PP have mentioned.  The less I breathe, the less baby breathes.
