Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

What's up with Triaminic?

My son has had a clear runny nose for about two weeks now.  No fever, no vomiting, some coughing.  I called the ped and the nurse told me to try Triaminic Cold and Allergy, that it was safe from 4 months on.  I go to the pharmacy, check all the Triaminics and none were indicated for children under 4 years.  Before I call back, have any of your peds suggested Triaminic?  Or have you used it on LO?

  • Nope never tried it. Post what you find out.  Hope your LO is feeling better soon

  • off the subject, I used to love the orange triaminic when I was younger.

I took Ava to the pedi last week and she too has a cold.  And the dr told me there wasnt anything I could give her because they dont make cold medicines for toddlers.

You could ask the pharmacist there or call the pedi again and ask them.

  • A couple of years ago all children's cold medicine was pulled off the shelves and then not recommended for anyone under 4 (some with decongestants are not recommended until age 6). I know some doctors are ok with cough medicine after age 1 or so. I do use robitussin with my older daughter who is 3.5. My pedi doesn't recommend it until after 2 and that is only when its really bad.

Honestly, with a clear runny nose, as long as there is no fever and minimal coughing, I wouldn't medicate. I don't really see the need to. My kids have runny noses half the winter.

  • Not triaminic, but my pedi did recommend an allergy med that was for 2+ when DS had allergies. He was around 9 months at the time. They just gave me instructions for a smaller dose. I was sort of nervous about it too, but I didn't know what else to do. It did help, and he only needed it for about a week.

  • Yup - took B to the pedi last week with a stuffy/runny nose and fever. She said she has a cold and to get the Triaminic for Chest/Nasal Congestion to prevent it from getting to her ears and chest - it's the yellow one. She gave me a sheet that had proper amounts for each age. So per the pedi, I give B 1.25ml every 6 hours.

  • I use the regular Triaminic for pain relief.  I think it says under two years, ask a doctor but it's otherwise safe for 2+ years.  DS falls into the weight range under the "2 years old" category on the chart, plus the pedi has "prescribed" acetaminophen for him before so I'm okay with using it.  Not sure about the special cold & allergy kind though.

Ditto this. Officially there aren't OTC medications for toddlers, but our pedi will 'prescribe' one and the dose if it's needed. I know I've used Robitussin on both kids, etc but only with the right brand/mix and dose my pedi gives.

For a snotty nose I wouldn't bother, but if it's a hacking cough and they can't sleep, etc then we do give something.

  • Obviously there are many varying opinions, situations, and such, but I did find two interesting articles about medicating children under 2 for colds/coughs:

    https://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2008/01/cough_medicine.html

     https://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2008/09/parents_otc.html

I hate that there is always conflicting info out there...your pediatrician tells you one thing, FDA another...I guess in the end you have to do what you feel most comfortable with and what works for your child.
