Won't drink anything besides milk?

Any one else dealing with this? My LO will drink 24-26oz of milk a day but it's making him constipated and his pedi wants me to cut it down to 14-16oz or so.

I've thought about watering down his milk with water to see if that helps. He didn't poop for almost 2 days over the weekend and that's very unusual for him. He might drink 1oz of water a day and every once in a while he'll drink watered down juice but not that often.

Any other advice is more then welcome.

  • My daughter only likes milk too.  I'll offer her water, she'll take a sip and then look at me suspiciously and refuse the rest.  I've even added honey to the water to see if I could at least get her interested...nope didn't work either.

  • What kind of juice have you tried? DD had some orange juice for the first tome this weekend and pooped three times yesterday. I also got her to take some juice by giving her it straight up once and she liked it, then I began watering it down and most times she has 3/4 water with 1/4 juice in her cup if she isn't drinking enough milk that day. She never drinks a lot though anyway.
  • Can you try a different sippy cup? We've been having constipation problems for the past month and I figured out I can get DD to drink more if I give her a straw sippy. Or just have her drink from my glass of water with a straw. Also, we tried apple cider after the pedi recommended it to help with constipation and she sucked it down. I warmed it like I do for her milk.

    lol. Yup! Same here.

Is your LO not dealing with any constipation (if you don't mind me asking)?

We haven't tried any orange juice yet but thanks! We'll try it today.

I've tried straight up juice but that was about a month ago. Maybe I'll try again.

We're still trying to transition to sippy cups. He just chews on the straws still but we'll keep trying.

    Thanks! :)

Ah, yes, I didn't look at his age. We had good luck with the Nuby sippy cups - I think the 8 oz with super spout. DD calls it her "baba" because it is very similar to a bottle. We just recently switched to a straw (in my effort to "trick" her into drinking more water). Other juices I found in my constipation research (haha) are white grape, welches grape with added fiber, prune (she does actually drink this) and water with fresh squeezed lemon. Sometimes warming the liquid gets DD to drink more...good luck!

  • We had this problem alittle while back.  DS would only drink milk.  It came down to first watering down every bottle....half milk, half water. Then at the next peditrician appointment it was only offer milk at meals....which meant water or juice....I was concerned because DS wouldn't take juice at all (full strength or watered down) but after a day or two of him being difficult he caved. He still drinks milk at his three meals but only water at any other time of the day.  Good luck, wish I had some tricks to offer.

  • Same bought here. DD has to have soy milk, but she won't drink juice or water, in any kind of cup. It's getting a little expensive, and i'd like her to drink water. I don't really care if she ever drinks juice, she eats lots of fruits so not a big deal.
