Cloth Diapering

I am really not liking overnight CD'ing.

It is so nice not to even have disposables on hand, but I cannot stand the smell of his overnights. Its not a horrible, burning ammonia smell, but he reeks of pee in the AM. He has never leaked, but his skin stinks, his onesie stinks, and his sleeper  stinks. I spray him off completely down there and wipe him clean, but his skin still stinks. We bathe at night after supper, so bathing  during the morning is a PITA  since he sleeps  in so late.

We use MF inserts and a layer of hemp inside a BG 4.0. Does anyone has any suggestions to help me keep at it?

  • Sounds like you need to rock a soak with Rockin' Green.  They've made a new product, too, called Funk Rock that's even more specifically geared for ammonia smell.

its not really ammonia, he just smells like he peed everywhere. It is definitely not what laundry day smells like.

  • Kawaii overnights are working for us.  My son used to soak through his huggie overnights. I use the 2 mf inserts the diaper comes with plus hemp. The outside layer is very thick, thicker than bg so maybe that is why they work so good? The diaper is full of pee but nothing else smells.

I really wanted to love fitteds for overnight since they are breathable but everything stinks like pee when we tried them.

  • Considering DD smelled like that this morning after a night in a disposable, I'll take the CD over that.

This! Have you tried disposables overnight recently? Reason I ask is, we use disposables pretty infrequently, so I often forget how bad they smell... but man, we traveled over Thanksgiving and used disposables, and DD's diaper REEKED every morning! And it didn't just smell like pee, it smelled like pee mixed with nasty chemicals. YUCK!

That said, her room really used to reek of pee every morning (this is at home, in cloth diapers), and it doesn't anymore. I don't really know what changed. I'm more diligent about doing a bleach soak regularly to keep ammonia stink at bay -- the pee-smell was definitely different from the ammonia-smell, but maybe the solution that's keeping ammonia at bay is also helping with the pee smell. Or maybe her pee just changed -- but then, like I said, she was stinky in disposables. *shrug* maybe try bleach (on the inserts only). It's cheap, and might help.

  • I make my own wipe solution that uses baby wash, baby oil, and tea tree oil. DD smells like pee all over when she wakes up and it usually takes a "mini bath" of wipes to get her cleaned up for the day but once I'm done she's smelling fresh. Maybe reconsider what you're using on your wipes?

  • We used sposies for overnite up until a few weeks ago. I am a weird one who has never thought sposies smell bad.

This exactly.  I use this same recipe for wipes and it gets her smelling nice and fresh. She does smell like pee in the morning, but its not too bad.  I found its worse in B4s for whatever reason.

  • I've had this same problem with overnight cloth diapering. There are two diapers that have worked for me overnight so far. Happy Heinys using both the inserts that come with the diaper and Fuzzibunz using both of the inserts that come with the diapers!

I only have a couple of those so when I don't have them/not clean I use sposies. I think he smells in the morning a little as well but his onesie and sleeper doesn't. With the cloth diaper it's not absorbing all of the wetness so the onesies starts too so it's essentially leaking. I'd rather him be in a sposie at night than wake up with wet/dry piss all over him.

This for us.  Well, we weren't using disposables.  We were using her prefolds and covers.  2 prefolds and 2 layers of fleece and she'd wake up soaked through in the middle of the night and reeking like pee.  Kawaiis have solved that problem for us, I love them.
